By you having a dog as your pet you have a responsibility towards your dog and towards
yourself to have your dog house trained. The basic fundamentals in teaching your dog to
become obedient to you and to respond to your commands needs to be understood by
your dog and that is the crux of this article. This article will go into the issue of potty
training dogs and 2 rules that must be enforced otherwise your dog will not learn how to
be house trained.

Before I go into these rules, I must state the fact that most dog owners keep their dogs
inside the house some of the time. It's a rare occasion that a dog is full time inside the
house but for the most part dogs are inside the house a majority of the time. For this
reason alone, you must learn the basic fundamentals of potty training dogs.

Keeping your dog under control and house trained is needed for hygenic standards and for
control purposes as well.

So what's the first rule?

Animals make mistakes. They make plenty of mistakes and we are here to teach them
how to act and respond to us. If you walk into a room of your house and find a mistake
left by your dog, do not reprimand your dog. Let me repeat that first rule again. Finding a
mistake left by your dog and you do not catch your dog doing it, do not punish or
reprimand your dog. If you end up reprimanding your dog for doing business in the
wrong area and they're laying down in the living room, for all that your dog knows
you're reprimanding them for laying on the floor! So what gives?

I know it's a little disparaging to wake up from a nap and find out that your dog couldn't
hold it any longer and found a corner in one of your bedrooms to do their business. First
impulse is to fly off the handle and yell at your dog. Don't do it. For the sake of your
neighbors, for the sake of your dog, and for the sake of your blood pressure. Relax. I
know that's easier said than done but remember that your dog is still in training mode and
has a lot to learn. Your dog will learn it in due time.

Clean up the mess, disinfect it and show the dog outside where they are supposed to go in
the first place.

Having patience while teaching your dog new tricks is one of the basic fundamental traits
that you can acquire. I know it is very hard to hold yourself back but the end result will
prove its worth for you.

Second rule is that when your dog finally does something correctly, praise him. Animals
have born instincts and can genuinely tell if you mean the praise that you give your dog.
Animals will give you unconditional love back if you praise them for them doing
something correctly. Your dog will want more of your praise and they want to please you
as much as they can, so pile it on when they do something right.
