[P186]People Search On The Web
by Terje Ellingsen, Ter

We have also seen an increase in the number of people doing a career search online or using the web in the search for employment. Since large online employment or work position databases has grown tremendously the recent years, more and more career or job position searchers have found it much easier and more convenient to use the internet rather than the old-fashioned way of combing the local newspaper.

Even though the internet provides online marketplaces where the average person can choose between jobs or positions from sources that outperforms any traditional employment source seen before, when it comes to the amount of jobs and the variation width of geographical locations, this situation is not without problems. You can find a job anywhere in the world for any job or position that you wish, but so can someone else. Most companies who offer jobs online are overflowed with resumes after having been listing an available position online. Thus it goes without saying that to stand apart from the crowd, you have to have the ideal set of skills and also be desirable in other ways. If not, your resume will not even be noticed.

Another problem with applying for a job online, is that there is not much room for creativity. The method of submitting resumes and cover letters that the internet allow, does neither provide room for individuality.

So, what is the solution to become visible among the hundreds or maybe thousands of other job applicants? If you aim to receive a career or job offer from an online site, you need to perform a different type of effort than applying for a job position listed in your local newspaper.

1. Find the right job for you. This is done by going into yourself and honestly assess your qualifications. Then you can have a realistic idea of what type of job you are actually looking for.

2. Search on all the online posision search sites that you know of. This means the major general job sites like Monster and CareerBuilder, but also the smaller, industry specific sites like Aviation Job Search or Dice.com. It might seem tedious to sift through thousands of jobs to find the ones you want to apply for. However, I recommend that you really take the time to do this.

3. Select a few companies or places that you would like to work. Visit their websites and check out if they have an employment page. Use this to submit your job application. Since these sites normally don't receive the amount of traffic that even the minor posision search sites do, you have a much better chance of standing out from the crowd by doing it this way.

It's better to narrow your sites than apply to any job you are remotely qualified for. Each job application requiers your full attention to stand out from the crowd. That means you have to make cover letters and resumes individually for each particular job you are applying for. Don't use the cut and paste technique to submit the same info to 100 job application pages at a time. This won't work.

You should also keep track of where you have submitted your cover letters and resumes, as well as which work posision search site you found the job listing through. You'll need to follow up on leads in the search process and you also need to evaluate the job sites you have used, so that you can determine which sites best suit your needs.
