Contrary to what most people think, hypnosis is not something that is done to you. And all hypnosis is actually self hypnosis. In the end, it is you who induces the hypnotic state. Once in a hypnotic state, you can use tools such as visualization and imagery to reprogram the subconscious mind. And with a persistent effort, we can actually diminish emotional responses, pain, old beliefs and memories which are no longer appropriate in your lives.
A couple of areas where hypnosis has become quite popular in recent years is weight management and smoking cessation. However, these are only a few of an enormous number of potential applications. Other areas include pain control, habit disorders, addictions, stress, self-esteem issues, sports enhancement, memory, concentration, and symptom control for disease. Self hypnosis could actually be used as a health tool where a person could manage the workings of the total mind and body at optimum levels, continually healing changes brought about by life stressors, while allowing us to accelerate our learning and reach goals far beyond our present expectations.
The mind is amazing thing. It works like a video recorder and our thoughts simply become tapes that we play over and over again. The bad news is that most of us play mainly negative tapes, visualizing negative outcomes, or rehash memories that only serve to stir up anxiety or depression. It is also not uncommon for us to speak internally to ourselves in quite critical ways. As we continually replay these mental tapes, we put ourselves in a light trance state and become preoccupied and internally focused. Thus, it is very important to realize that our thoughts, imagination and internal dialogue can be counterproductive to our real goals in the end.
So when we reprogram our subconscious mind for success, we request to be made aware of our unproductive emotional states and corresponding behaviors, so we can choose to change them. It can actually be as simple as crossing out the undesirable thought pattern, or super-imposing the chosen goal picture, giving a new message to the subconscious mind. While this may sound like very trivial, it is actually a very powerful reprogramming technique.
Self hypnosis allows us to change our internal world. While we use our imagination, we can stir feelings and alter our behavior and attitudes. When you change how you think, you can visualize and imagine you would like things to be, your feelings and behavior will start to change. You will not only see what is possible, but the mind will also send up other suggestions in support of your desired goals. Many times the mind will suggest things that you never even considered. Never forget that the mind actually works backwards. When it sees the ideal goal clearly in great definition, it will make an action plan. Many people report that these changes just seem to occur automatically.
We have all seen shows where a person does something they would not normally do under hypnosis. They hypnotize a woman, put her to sleep and then wake her and give her an onion to eat telling her it is an apple. The woman eats the onion and enjoys it as if it were really an apple. Some believe that with hypnosis you can convince a person of almost anything while others believe that their sub-conscious would stop them from doing anything that could harm them. There is no such thing as a person that is cannot be hypnotized, but some are hypnotized easier than others are. Many people feel that self-hypnosis is a very weak form of hypnosis but with this tool, you can motivate yourself and even cure some illnesses.
How Self-Hypnosis Works
You need to sit quietly somewhere peaceful. Imagine a happy scene such as sitting in a garden looking at the flowers and birds. Now, add sounds and scents to this picture in your imagination. You are happy and centered. Self-hypnosis makes this seem very real. This is controlling the power of the unconscious mind. The medical strength of a word or self-hypnosis seems odd compared with medicine. Although medicine is material, self-hypnosis can have a material force also. It causes reflex reactions and deeply influences a person. With self-hypnosis, it strengthens the action of each word.
There are a number of circumstances to consider that make self-hypnosis more effective. To make self-hypnosis work at top efficiently it is best that the brain receives very little information about their surroundings as possible. Once in this condition, the brain is able to concentrate on what a person hears.
The influence of self-hypnosis works best when:
- He or she really believe that self-hypnosis works - During self-hypnosis, a person is not nervous but they are slightly excited - The person is interested in what they hear - Being a little tired physically - Muscles do not send signals to the brain, so muscles are weakened
Self-hypnosis is being able to relax and remove stress and pressure from you. In as little as fifteen minutes, you can restore your strength or even relieve pain without medication.
Some of the Basic Self-hypnosis Exercises
1. Breathing ? Get comfortable either sitting or lying down, close your eyes and watch how you breathe but do not control it. 2. Pulse ? Relax and close your eyes. Turning your palms inward put your hands together so your fingers are touching. You will feel a pulse caused by this. Concentrate and you can feel the pulse in other parts of your body. 3. Relax, close your eyes and feel cool, light air touching your forehead. This works well in getting rid of a headache.
If you have decided to learn self-hypnosis, they you have to believe it is an effective tool and can help you. Remember, practice does make it easier.
