Do you find yourself striving to move forward, but constantly getting nowhere? You most likely have barriers to personal growth and development that you probably not even be aware of. Alot of people have these barriers that hold them back and deny them the achievement of their personal or career goals. Regardless of the nature of your barriers, it's possible to overcome the obstacles and achieve your goals with some simple adjustments to your lifestyle and mindset.

Probably the most common barrier to personal growth and development is your own imagination. How much you can accomplish is only limited by your vision and determination to accomplish it. If you think that you can't accomplish something, then most likely you won't accomplish it. On the other hand, with a positive attitude and positive thoughts about your success, and the proper effort, you will succeed. It's amazing how much of a difference a positive attitude can actually make. It can really be that simple.

Another common barrier to personal growth and development is past failures or events. Often our past failures or bad events in our lives get in the way of future growth and development. We reminisce about past failures and this often hampers our attempts to achieve new goals. It's normal for our minds to flash back to such events, but only by moving past them can we truly grow as people and in our careers. We have to put aside our past negative incidents so that we can accomplish our future goals. Dwelling on the past will get us nowhere.

Another common barrier is our support systems, or lack there of. Negative or non-supportive messages from family, friends, and co-workers will only bring us down. Surrounding yourself with people who are like minded and striving for success in their careers and lives will help you to do the same.

Whether you get support from an organized group, your friends, or your family makes no difference. The support that you get, the motivational pep talks and the shoulder to cry on when things go wrong will help you keep going when things get tough. A strong support system is an important part of helping you to achieve your goals and overcome your barriers to personal growth and development.

A less common barrier to personal growth and development is the lack of planning. Many people go through life taking only what is handed to them. They settle for the mundane and don't bother to set goals or strive to exceed beyond the norm. Setting goals, designing a blueprint to reach those goals, and making a timeline for success is a vitally important and often ignored barrier.

Remember, whatever your personal barriers to personal growth and development, you can overcome them. Any person who sets goals, creates a timeline for success, has adequate support, and strives for excellence can overcome these barriers and achieve the success that everyone deserves.

Those days are long, long gone. There is no such thing as a lifetime job anymore, you have to constantly grow and develop to stay competitive in the modern workplace. Companies are not just looking for workers, supervisors, and managers; they are looking for leaders, team builders, and people who can build strong interpersonal relationships.

What do I have to do?
If you want to arm yourself with these desirable skills then you must take charge of your career. Motivation is the key to learning, growing, and making yourself attractive to employers.

Your personal growth and development efforts should generally fall into four categories. They are:

1Knowledge
2Leadership
3Responsibility
4Advocacy

We’ll look at each of these in turn.

Knowledge
Cultivate your ongoing thirst for knowledge. This means constantly looking for opportunities to learn about something that will add to your base of knowledge. Take a management or business class, arrange an internship with a leader you admire, learn a foreign language, or pursue your MBA.

Check with your employer about programs available to support your acquisition of knowledge. Many companies offer tuition support, mentoring programs, career cross training, and other options to help employees expand their minds.

Leadership
Leadership is more than just a popular buzzword in the business world; it is the single most important attribute that you can develop in yourself. Companies understand that in a competitive world they need to employ people who can motivate, inspire, and lead their teams to better performance.

Look for opportunities to develop and practice your leadership skills. Volunteer to serve on a committee from your professional association, organize a community project, or serve as a mentor. Make sure that these activities are visible to others so that they will see you in a leadership role and have confidence that you are capable in this area.

Responsibility
Actively look for ways to increase the responsibilities that are part of your job description. Offer ideas or suggestions for improving the business and then lead a project to try out those ideas, or step up to manage a company program. When you demonstrate that you are enthusiastic about personal growth and development, you become a much more valuable part of the organization.

This does not mean, however, that you should run roughshod over your peers, colleagues, or employees. Be eager and motivated, but don’t be blinded by ambition or ego.

Advocacy
This last category can be challenging because it requires you to advocate for yourself to others. Instead of sitting back and waiting to be noticed, go to company leadership and talk about how you can contribute more to the organization. Show you are committed to improvement by asking for feedback and applying that information to your interactions with your management as well as your employees.

When you use tact and diplomacy to discuss your achievements you are more likely to be noticed and noted as a person with a strong future of career growth.
