by Abigail Aaronson, Abi
Pressure is being put on young women to look like models or actresses. This pressure comes from many sources including the media and their peers. In the process, women are losing their self-esteem, which manifests itself in many ways, including depression, eating disorders, and plastic surgery.

With the popularity of breast surgery increasing every year, it is important for every woman to understand her breast implant options. The first step to a successful breast surgery is choosing the right surgeon for you.

You want to be sure that your doctor is experienced in his field and that his former patients have been satisfied with his work. Once you have chosen the right doctor for your surgery then you will have a consultation about what he believes is the best option for you and your body.

The doctor may suggest that a breast lift is the best choice for you. This is most likely if you're an older women who want to give her breasts some lift and perk. Like other parts of the body, your bust tends to sag as it ages.

A lift procedure may also be appropriate for mothers who have given birth and are not happy with the look and shape of their cleavage after childbirth and nursing. If you feel that a breast lift is not the option for you, then you may want to consider augmentation.

To increase your bust size, the doctor may suggest implants. Once you've decided that this is what you need, you and your doctor must decide the best size implants for your shape, because you want them to look natural for your body type. Many woman end up getting breast enhancement results that look fake and unnatural. This is because their implants are too large for their body shape and size. Another topic to discuss with your doctor is the material the implant is made of and what substance fills it.

In the early days of breast surgery there were fears about silicone implants leaking and releasing harmful chemicals into the body. As technology has advanced so have our breast implant options. Today, the two main options for the materials that fill implants are saline and silicone. There are pros and cons to both substances and they have different applications in enhancement and augmentation, so it is essential to consider all your options carefully before choosing the best implant option for you.

The two most important factors that determine the success of your of surgery are - researching your implant options and choosing the right surgeon. It is important to know all the pros and cons of surgery, because it is a change that will affect your entire life.

Stage 1: Tissue Expansion During a mastectomy, the general surgeon often removes skin as well as breast tissue, leaving the chest tissues flat and tight. To create a breast shaped space for the breast implant, a tissue expander is placed under the remaining chest tissues.

The tissue expander is a balloon-like device made from elastic silicone rubber. It is inserted unfilled, and overtime, small amounts of sterile saline are added by inserting a small needle through the skin to the filling port of the device. As the tissue expander fills, the tissues over the expander begin to stretch, similar to the gradual expansion of a woman's abdomen during pregnancy.

The tissue expander creates a new breast shaped pocket for a breast implant. Tissue expander placement occurs under anesthesia in an operating room. Operative time is generally one to two hours. The procedure may require a brief hospital stay, or be done on an outpatient basis. Typically, you can resume daily activity after two to three weeks.

Post Mastectomy
Stage 1:
Tissue Expander
Because the chest skin is usually numb from the mastectomy surgery, it is possible that you may not experience pain from the placement of the tissue expander. However, you may experience feelings of pressure or discomfort after each filling of the expander, which subsides as the tissue expands.

During this first stage of implant reconstruction, the plastic surgeon ensures that the pocket created by the tissue expander is positioned correctly and is the desired shape and size. Based on the result of the expansion, the surgeon selects a breast implant to replace the tissue expander.

Stage 2: Placing the Breast Implant After the tissue expander is removed, the unfilled breast implant is placed in the pocket, and then filled with sterile saline. The surgery to replace the tissue expander with a (implant exchange) is usually done under anesthesia in an operating room. It may require a brief hospital stay or b e d o n e o n a n outpatient basis.

The type of breast implant used will be determined by you and your plastic surgeon by evaluating the dimensions and shape of your desired breast. Breast implants are available in round and contoured shapes in a wide variety of sizes. Stage 2: Breast Implant and Nipple/ Areola Reconstruction
