[B181]Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss
by Jason Uvios, Jas
Obesity in the USA is considered as an epidemic and as such, affecting nearly 60 millions Americans. More than 23 millions are deeply obese; meaning every one of them is more than 100 pounds in weights. The weight loss surgery is a widely growing area of surgery.

Weight loss surgery can make dramatic changes when the cosmetic surgeons apply it. There are actually three kinds of weight loss cosmetic surgery.

- Lap band surgery

A reconstructive surgical process is there to shorten the stomach, limiting the food consumption. It is also called the lap band surgery. Lap band surgery can curb the patients? food intake. The surgeon makes a small pocket on the top of the stomach where the food enters. As such, the patients consume less amount of food; they feel lively, as the lower outlet of the pouch is made smaller, because of which food empties slowly.

- Malabsorptive surgeries

In this surgery, the intestine length is reduced, so that consumed food is not exposed to the intestine. Therefore, there would be less absorption of the calories from the food.

- Gastric bypass surgery

The Combined effects of the restrictive and malabsorptive surgeries are what known as Gastric bypass surgery. A small stomach pouch is created to restrict the amount of food consumption. Thereafter the duodenum and the other parts of the intestine are attached, causing a bypass for the malabsorption. The bypass has different names: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Distal Gastric Bypass.

Still weight loss surgery is not without the shortfalls:

Restrictive and gastric bypass surgeries would create health risks like nutritional deficiencies for calcium, Vitamin B12 and iron. In addition, there would be a possibility of intestinal leakage.

A dumping syndrome could be there at times the food goes fast through the small intestines and the patients might feel bitter conditions: nausea, cold sweat, dizzy or fainting spells. The patients could face the symptoms like diarrhea.

If you are very much concerned about the scars and fast recovery, you can easily access the laparoscopic or the bariatric surgery. A traditional open surgery option is also open to you, side by side.

As such, it is the duty of the cosmetic surgeons to check out which cosmetic process is suitable for the patients.

Studies have shown us that health deteriorates rapidly when someone is seriously overweight; so many people feel that this type of weight loss surgery is their only option. However, it should be noted that it is not a guaranteed solution.

What types of people are good candidates for this procedure? Some surgeons accept patients in their 60's and some will even operate on teens, but since this is considered to be a last-step treatment for obesity, it is used only when all other conventional methods such as dieting, or even an abdominoplasty treatment have failed. Candidates must have severe obesity-related health problems.

There are 3 different stages or classifications of obesity that use the Body Mass Index (BMI). Morbid obesity (BMI 40+), super-obesity (BMI 50+) and end-stage obesity (BMI 60+). Severe obesity is a chronic, frequently progressive, life threatening disease. Does this mean that undergoing surgery is more of a risk than the actual disease itself?

You may find yourself asking if the risks of Bariatric surgery outweigh the benefits. Most doctors say the benefits do outweigh the risks. If someone is 100 percent over their ideal weight, then they have a much higher mortality rate than someone who is within their normal weight. Surgery for any reason does have its risks, however even without the risk involved, some patients are unable to follow the after surgery, post-operative instructions regarding exercise and diet.

When asked if the result of this type of invasive surgery was worth the potential risks involved, most patients said yes. According to some studies there were possibly more psychological benefits rather than physical. Or as one doctor suggested, perhaps the physical benefits were that much better because of the psychological benefits.

Perhaps you have been thinking about having surgery for your weight issue, or Bariatric surgery as it is also called. If so, then have you spoken with a doctor? If it is something you would consider, then make sure you read everything you can about the subject, as well as speaking with a doctor.

It is a good idea to write down questions you would like to ask during your initial consultations. Keep in mind you can get as many opinions as you like before making a decision that will very likely affect the rest of your life.
