[S632]Smoking Bans In Restaurants
by Sandy Tonsing, San

Smoking bans are something that every nation is very gung ho about in the recent times, although it's a different matter whether these bans are actually implemented or not. Pertaining to the fact that smoking is not just playing with the lives of the people or to be precise the human resources but also with environment and wealth, huge scale efforts are being made from different influential quarters to get a grip over this addiction. There is nothing as important as human resource to build a prosperous and healthy economy. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that the human beings are rescued from the powerful hold of the addiction of smoking. The developed nations were the first to notice and attend to this fact. They realized that a bright future won't be possible with smoke over their heads. The smoke of the cigarette had to be cleared from the environment and the addiction had to be cleared from the lives of the people as soon as possible. National development is impossible without a healthy and able population and smoking is a big impediment towards this cause.

Smoking has been termed as an epidemic in many of the developed countries including the US and the UK. In the US, smoking is also very much common among the teenagers who can be safely referred to as children, and the adolescents. This is nothing but an alarm to the country as their coming generation is falling prey to probably the most widespread addiction in the world. Therefore, the authorities pulled up their sleeves and made and passed a number of acts to the effect of enforcing bans on smoking in various parts of the country, both indoors and outdoors. The positive effects of these attempts have already showed results in the form of a considerable decrease in the rate of second hand smoking, a very lethal side effect of smoking that is sometimes even more dangerous than active smoking. As far as smoking in the UK is concerned, the addiction is so dear to the people there, that they were quite unhappy with the Prime Minister Mr. Tony Blair for imposing such bans. But there is no denying the fact that sooner or later the people will realize that the regulations on smoking served them big time.

Well, coming back to the US, like in the UK imposing bans in this country also haven't been a dream run. People in these countries are so much into addictions that they can't take anybody interfering with their ways of life as long as they are not against the law. Inspite of oppositions and dejection from the population the authorities succeeded in banning smoking. But the war is yet to be won in the very important US state of Pennsylvania. In this state the authorities are having a tough time. Going by the trend followed in other states, it is expected that the authorities will have the last laugh and the Pennsylvanians will have to think before they take out the fag in the open.

One thing that you need not be worried about carrying in the open is the quit smoking drug in the likes of . I guess you will get a pat in the back for trying to rid yourself of the addiction. In case you are wondering where to from, well its easy just !

conflict between the smoking companies, the groups that are supposed to study the different

effects of tobacco and smoking, and the organizations that are pushing for a smoke-free America.

Although the movie is fictional, it's not that far from what happens when lawmen try to pass

smoking bans for their states.

Smoking bans are public laws that prohibit the smoking of tobacco products in work places and in

public areas. These laws were created mainly in consideration for other people inside the work

place and in public areas who do not smoke. Studies have proven how much secondhand smoke can

affect a person who inhales it compared to how much it affects the smoker. There are three

parties affected in smoking bans ? the tobacco companies, the smokers, and the non-smokers.

Tobacco companies, as you would expect, have been adamant in having the smoking bans passed. Why

wouldn't they? Banning smoking in public areas would mean lesser sales and lesser income. And

lesser income never did bear good news for any kind of business.

Smokers are affected in a sense that they can no longer smoke cigarettes wherever they please.

Now that smoking bans have designated smoke-free areas, cigarette smokers now have to be careful

about where to light up. Because if they do it in a no-smoking area, they can and will be

punished by the law.

The non-smokers are the ones at the winning end of this bargain. First, they no longer need to

worry about developing medical complications such as lung diseases from unwillingly inhaling

secondhand smoke.

It is important for smokers and tobacco companies to understand the full extent of inhaling

secondhand smoke in order for them to understand the need for a smoking ban in certain places.

Continuously being exposed to environmental tobacco smoke increases a person's risk of

developing not only lung disease, but also cardiovascular complications and various kinds of

cancer.

Smokers should look at smoking bans in good light because it will also help them. If you think

about it in a positive way, doesn't the smoking ban help smokers cut back on the number of

cigarettes they burn in a day? Cutting back on the total amount of sticks smokers smoke in a day

can drastically improve the quality of their lives. Once a smoker realizes how much better his

body has become after he cuts back on cigarettes, he'll want to decide to completely quit the

habit.

If you look at the smoking ban provisions, it isn't bad at all. It is reasonable, if not

entirely right. Here are some of the rules included in the smoking ban:

Young men and women aged 17 and below are not allowed to purchase or smoke any tobacco

product.
A ?No Smoking? sign should be put up in areas where the smoking ban is supposed to be in

effect.
At maximum, big bars and restaurants can assign 30% of the total floor space for smoking

customers. The designated smoking area should be isolated from the non-smoking area and should

have a ?Smoking Area? sign to inform the customers.

People should not think of smoking bans so negatively. They are, after all, made for the sake of

smokers and non-smokers alike.
