[S639]Snap On Cordless Tools
by Linden J. Walhard, Lin

Gardening is a lot of fun, and it can be even more fun if you have the right tools to do it with. If you are planning a garden, take a moment to learn about the right garden tools so that you will have the tools that will last long and will make gardening more enjoyable. If you have any kind of physical problems, you especially want to use gardening tools that will assist you. If you have a bad back or knees, or arthritis in any part of your body, you don't want to bend too much. Get good tools and take care of them properly, and they will last forever.

When you go to buy garden tools, try them out. Take each one in your hand and make sure the grip is comfortable and it is not too heavy for you. If you find a tool you like but the grip is too small, you can add padding to the grip. Wider handles are usually easier to handle. To determine the material of the tools, you have to know about your garden. Light materials such as aluminum, plastic or carbon fiber are easy to use, but stainless steel is easier to maintain. Stainless steel may not be as sharp as aluminum, for shears, for example.

A Rea solution for many gardeners is to buy one tool with interchangeable tool heads. Now they know they have a grip they love, and they can use it for any tool. These tools can also be used as hand tools. When you are buying secateurs or shears, make sure you get a spring action which is not too stiff, to make it easier to use, especially if your hand are not strong or if you have arthritis. Pruners should have an easy cutting action for both thin and thick branches. If you look for a wheelbarrow, don't get a cheap one that will be turning in every direction. The classic two wheeled one with long handles is the best.

For some jobs, your manual garden tools may not be enough. If oi are going to cut a large hedge, for example, you will need a power trimmer. Just make sure you get tools that you are able to handle easily. You have to decide if you can use a corded tool or need cordless because of where the power is on your house.

All too quickly your shed will be filled with garden tools, so be careful about what you choose. You will need forks, spades, rakes, trowels and hoes, kept clean and oiled and ready to go. But you may also want seed sowers, a leaf blower, and weed pullers. Is a watering can enough for your needs, or do you need to install a watering system? All of these purchases will be determined by your budget, how much time you have to spend on the garden, and how large a property you have. But make sure you enjoy your gardening. I can give you a lot of joy and be great exercise as well!

== Battery Size ==
For cordless tools, power is measured by battery voltage: the higher the voltage, the more power and torque the tool has available. While more torque and power sounds to be good, there are trade-offs to be made. High voltage cordless tools are more expensive and heavier than their low voltage competitors.

Here is a sample comparison to illustrate the point. A typical 9.6 Volt cordless drill will typically weigh in the neighborhood of 3-1/2 pounds and cost anywhere from $35 - $150. As a comparison, a 19.2 Volt cordless drill can weigh nearly 10 pounds and cost about $125 - $300. If the increased power and torque of a 19.2 Volt drill is really needed, then the added cost may certainly be worth it. But if you are using your cordless drill to occasionally drive screws in your home, a 19.2 Volt drill will be harder to use (because of the higher weight), and harder to stomach purchasing (because of the increased cost). If you really do not need the extra power, a cheaper, light-weight cordless drill will probably suit your needs better.

== Battery Type ==
Two battery options are commonly available for cordless tools: Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion (Li-Ion). Do yourself a favor, do not buy a cordless tool that uses NiMH batteries. While tools with NiMH batteries are often cheaper, they are cheaper for a very good reason. NiMH batteries suffer from memory problems (they need to be completely discharged prior to being recharged or they lose charge capacity), they do not last for as many charge cycles (the batteries die sooner), and the batteries are lower power than Li-Ion batteries of the equivalent voltage.

== Number of Batteries ==
Another thing to take into consideration when getting a new cordless tool is the number of batteries that come with the tool. If you plan to use your tool for extended periods of time or often, you will want to only consider tools that come with two batteries. It is really frustrating when your batteries dies in the middle of a project and you have to wait an hour or two for the battery to charge before you can get back to what you were doing. When you are purchasing a tool, check that it comes with two batteries. If it doesn't, find out the cost of an additional battery and add that in when you are comparing prices between tools.

==Charging Batteries==
Many higher-end cordless tools come with advanced chargers which allow the battery to be charged in a very short period of time; some in less than 30 minutes. Other cordless tools come with chargers that can take up to 3 hours to completely charge a battery. If you require a quick-charging battery for your tool, look into the charging options that are available prior to getting a cordless tool.

== Tool and Battery Storage ==
Even when your tool is not being used, it will still draw a slight amount of power from the battery. While the amount of energy being drawn is slight, it can add up a lot over the course of days, or weeks. So when you store your cordless tools, always remove the battery from the tool; this will help keep it charged. Never keep your battery in the charger. Yes, there are some battery chargers that claim to be "smart" about this, but in general keeping your cordless tool batteries in the charger will lead to them dying sooner than if you do not. When storing your batteries avoid cold and/or heat. Cold weather will not harm your battery long-term, but it will reduce the amount of power available when the tool is being used. High heat can permanently harm the batteries of your cordless tools. Avoid it, and never charge your batteries in an area that is overly hotas this can really damage the battery.

== Pick a Brand ==
One way to avoid problems with the availability of charged batteries is to decide on a battery size and brand and stay with it. If you consistently get the same brand of tool with the same battery size when buying lights, screwdrivers, saws, drills, etc, you'll be able to share batteries and chargers between all of your tools. This will greatly increase the number of batteries you have available and it ensures that you'll never run out of charged batteries.
