[S744]Sony Ericsson W760 A
by Alex Gwen Thomson, Ale
The Sony Ericsson W760 is a fully loaded candy bar style slider phone designed with the average user and the tech fanatic in mind. This is one of the highest caliber phones on the market without a touch screen interface. What it lacks in touch screen goodness, however, it more than makes up for in amazing features.

Announced in January 2008, the Sony Ericsson W760 is a quad band GSM device. This means that it can be used anywhere in the world simply by swapping out the SIM card when you arrive at your destination. Furthermore, because the Sony Ericsson W760 is such a high end device, the Sony Ericsson W760 also includes 3G data transfer speeds over the HSDPA and UMTS networks. As is the case with voice, these high speed data transfers can be accessed anywhere in the world thanks to global support.

Measuring in at approximately four inches by two inches by a half of an inch, the Sony Ericsson W760 is a surprisingly light device for including so many features. In addition, it weighs in at only 103 grams, making it a device you can easily slip into your pocket or purse while you are on the go.

In typical Sony Ericsson fashion, the battery life is impressive. Expect to get approximately nine hours of talk time or 400 hours of standby time on a single charge. However, when accessing the 3G networks, expect battery time to be less.

For such a high end phone, the Sony Ericsson W760 does not have a high end screen. The resolution is only 240 by 320 pixels and the color depth is only 262k colors. Compared to other phones in this price range that include a 16 million color capable screen, the Sony Ericsson W760 looks flat and bland.

On the positive side, the digital camera is impressive on the Sony Ericsson W760. It features 3.2 megapixels of resolution, video support, and 2.5x digital zoom.

Multimedia is very well supported on the Sony Ericsson W760, hence the W before the model number, which denotes Walkman (Sony’s trademark media player). All of the most popular audio and video formats are supported as well as FM radio. Furthermore, it boasts stereo speakers and a variety of motion enabled controls for use with music and gaming. The built-in 40 MB of memory can easily be expanded via Memory Stick Micro cards.

Other features include Bluetooth 2.0 support, a large phone book, an alarm, a calendar, a stopwatch, a to-do list, a notepad, a calculator, a number of voice commands, a voice recorder, a speakerphone, email support, GPS support, and various fitness and navigation applications.

Pros

* Tons of features
* 3G / GPS support
* Great digital camera
* Excellent multimedia player
* Long battery life

Cons

* Not particularly attractive

Overall

The Sony Ericsson W760 is a fantastic phone if you do not want a touch screen device, making it likely the highest quality traditional cell phone on the market today. Unfortunately, the high price puts the Sony Ericsson W760 right in the line of sight of many of the touch screen devices that are flying off of shelves. This is the phone to get if you are completely sure that a touch screen device is not for you.
