Producing a very good quality recording is one thing. Enhancing it is another, more complicated, thing. Most quality albums that are out in the market today are the product of an elaborate procedure called mastering. Today, the procedure is increasingly using digital technology in processing audio recordings. This is called digital audio mastering.

Mastering is a general term to connote the entire procedure of treating a recording mix. It is the stage done after the recording mix and before the mass replication of the album or songs. The audio recording will undergo the process of enhancement and improvement. During the process of mastering, the tracks will be sequenced. All the unnecessary sounds or noises will be removed. And the product is a clear, pleasing sound.

Digital audio mastering is fast becoming a chosen procedure in mastering. It is slowly replacing the old analog process used in many decades. This procedure is also time-efficient. As everything is done with the use of digital technology, the product can be done at a shorter time than its analog counterpart. The engineer can even do the procedure off-line, through use of a digital audio workstation. Surely, digital audio mastering is an amazing advancement in mastering a recording.

More and more mastering engineers are shifting to the digital audio mastering due to the convenience it can give to them. Aside from that, the engineers can serve more clients while assuring a top-notch quality product to their customers. In the future, it can be expected that the analog mastering will be replaced fully by the digital process.

Amateur bands or singers can hope of a professional production of their recording. Their songs or album will come out like a work of a professional artist after being treated with digital audio mastering. It is precisely due to the superior technology employed in the digital domain.

What is wonderful about digital audio mastering is that the process is excellent to use since most of the recording equipment today are digital. Even the households use digital equipment in playing their music. Gone are the days of the old-fashioned audio tapes. Digital video and music players are the sought after instruments today. Hence, making the digital audio mastering compatible with these instruments. It relieves the mastering engineers the burden of transferring the analog-treated recordings into digital equipment before putting them into digital storage device. They can conveniently use digital gear in mastering the recordings and transferring it to a digital storage medium right away.

There is more than one reason why you might want a sound card that will support both MIDI files and digital audio files such as WAVE or MP3. Maybe you want to record your MIDI files in a format that can play on non-MIDI enabled equipment (you might get a wild hair and decide to email your romantic masterpiece to your girlfriend so she can play it on her computer or transfer it to CD). Or you might want to add lyrics to your MIDI composition (FYI, MIDI cannot create the sound of human voices because humans do not come equipped with MIDI IN and MIDI OUT jacks!).

Most sound cards can support both kinds of files (be sure to confirm with your dealer). Many cards include a built-in MIDI sound module that functions as a MIDI interface card and an external MIDI sound module all rolled into one. Although its functions and performance may be somewhat more limited than a MIDI interface card/ MIDI sound module combination, it is likely to be a lot cheaper as well. Such a card will play MIDI data that a program sends to it – that's right, it can generate MIDI music all by itself. Since it also supports digital audio files, this kind of card is about as multi-purpose as you could possibly expect.

Additionally, MIDI cards are usually set up to follow the General MIDI standard, meaning that they can play up to 16 “patches” (electronic instruments) at once, with each patch under the independent control of the musician. That means up to 16 different melodies and/or rhythms playing at once, as well as independent volume control, pitch control…I could go on and on because there are a lot of different MIDI commands that can be independently manipulated in order to create astonishingly complex compositions – Mozart would have been drooling if he had anticipated it.

Some cards also allow you to take a WAVE digital audio file and set it up as its own “patch” (in other words, the recorded audio becomes your own customized MIDI “instrument” that you can add to your pre-existing MIDI patch set and put into to your MIDI composition and manipulate just as you would a General MIDI patch.
