[S342]Setting Up Salt Water Tank
by Grojan Fabiola, Gro
With so many salt water fish species to choose from, there are many good reasons to invest in an aquarium and set it up full of fish and other creatures. Setting up a salt water fish tank requires more than just an aquarium, some water, some salt and a few fish, though. There are many different products you will need to purchase from your local saltwater fish store or online supplier, and many things you will need to learn about the creatures you are about to nurture in your home or office.

The first step to setting up s salt water fish tank is, quite obviously, choosing the aquarium. It is important to measure the space where the tank will be mounted so you don't purchase one that is too big. Larger aquariums are always better, though, so if you do not have space for at least a 55-gallon tank you might want to reconsider this hobby.

After you have chosen your aquarium you will need to decide what type of salt water fish species you want to keep. Keep in mind that salt water fish are much different then freshwater fish, and there are many species that do not get along with one another or might even try to eat the smaller species. If you are going to have plants, live coral and other sea creatures, you will also want to be sure that they are compatible with one another. It's a god idea to consult the staff at a local saltwater fish store or do some research using various publications and online resources before making any purchases.

Once you have decided what type of fish you want to have in your salt water fish aquarium you will have to buy your filtration equipment and other tank supplies. For the beginning aquarium keeper a good canister filter should do the trick for keeping a basic saltwater fish tank. Make sure to use the proper acclimation techniques when placing your first fish in the tank as well. This will ensure that your new aquarium will be a success.
