[B311]Being The Best Man
by Eric Hartwell, Eri
The Best Man in History

Before, the grooms did not court and woo their ladies into the altar. It was usual for a groom to kidnap a fair lady to become his bride. On his search for a bride, a groom usually took with him a trusted friend or soldier.

The best man was the groom's lookout and spy. He was also tasked to help the groom succeed by driving away the bride's relatives. After all, the groom was kidnapping his bride, usually from other tribes or clans. The bride's relatives wouldn't have given her up very easily and there's bound to be trouble. Thus, the groom took with him somebody ? his best man ? who could fight with him, protect him, and help him accomplish his mission.

It's hard to imagine today's best man wielding a sword and wearing armor to protect the groom from harm, but that was just what the best man of times past did. That was the best man's first and foremost role, then.

The Savvy Best Man

The best man of today has exchanged his sword for a champagne glass and his armor for a tuxedo. You'll see the savvy best man in weddings everywhere giving out a gay and usually embarrassing (for the groom, anyway) speech. Indeed, the best man's role in modern times is drastically different from his traditional role. However, one thing remains the same ? the best man is still important in a wedding's success or lack thereof.

The best man is still the groom's best man, the groom's trusted right hand. From day one until the end of the wedding ceremonies and post wedding ceremonies, the best man is the groom's one-man support system and his trusted adviser.

The best man is in charge of making preparations for the bachelor's party that every groom (as well as his set of rowdy friends) expects to get before he ties the knot. The best man will have to think of the theme, the venue, the entertainment, the food, and the attendees of the bachelor party.

On the wedding day itself, the best man is tasked with the job of making sure that the groom will arrive on time for his wedding. He will arrange for the groom's transportation, even acting as the groom's personal chauffeur if necessary. The best man is also ?Keeper of the Ring.? This means exactly what you think it means and this is not in any way related to Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. During the ceremonies, he'll be passing the bride's ring to the groom.

During the wedding reception, the best man will have to give a toast to the bride and the groom. After the wedding, if no other arrangements were made, the best man will drive the newlyweds to the airport or wherever they wish to be dropped off. He can also be the one tasked with the return of rentals as well as the safekeeping of belated wedding gifts.

The best man is important in weddings for he has various responsibilities that can make a great difference in how a wedding turns out. More than his ?assistive? roles, however, the best man's most important role of all is bearing witness to his best friend's or close relative's marriage.

The couple has a prerogative if who will play as best man for their wedding. Traditionally, the best man should come from a group of single men, however today, many best man are themselves already married. Usually, the person that will play as the best man are either the groom's brother or best friend. The role of best man in the wedding is very important. He is responsible for doing different assisting roles. Whether the ceremony is formal or informal, there should be an agreement to be made, rituals and traditions to be observed.

As with the duty of best man, he is expected to assist the groom with some important matters. The best man is the main companion of the groom when selecting his wardrobe. And not only for the groom but also for all male participants of the ceremony. Also, if the groom wants to have a stag party, he's the one who's responsible for arranging the event. The best man's arrangement can make or break the party. This should be a fun and enjoyable time for the rest of the groom's mates, therefore, making some wrong move can make an embarrassment for him, and you don't want that to happen and end up full of regret.

And with the wedding rehearsal call, the best man must be present. All preparations for the ceremony need participant's presence, especially the best man who'll take part during the wedding entourage. It is necessary for him to practice and rehearse his actions and role to eliminate mistakes that may occur during the ceremony proper. In this way, the dignity of the holy matrimony can be well preserved.

Before the couple offers the role for best man, they should consider first some factors concerning their choice for this certain role. Would he be willing to accept the duty? It should be asked first, not all men love to take responsibility being the groom's best man. It is very important to know that he is happy to accept the role and responsibility being the major assistant of the groom. Is he the right choice to play as your best man? Considering that the role of this man is pivotal, understand if he has the ability and enthusiasm to manage organizing the event. And the most important consideration, is he available to take part during pre-planning preparations? And during the wedding ceremony proper? This consideration is very critical, you don't want to crash your wedding because of one important person that is missing.

Traditionally, to thank and appreciate the effort and participation of the best man, most couples extend their warm gratitude by means of gifts. The gift doesn't need to be expensive to be more appreciated by your best man. But the thing is, behind that wrapped present is your thought of giving him a special gift for his job well done, and his generosity for sharing his time to support your wedding. After all, he is the groom's best buddy, brother or whatever it is as long as he is close to him. Most popular gifts given to best men are personalized items like engravable cufflinks, thank you cards and other personalized items that can make unique groomsmen gifts as well.
