[B309]Being A Healthy Vegetarian
by Myron Huett, Myr

A vegetarian is a person who avoids all types of meat, including cold cuts, pork, beef, chicken and fish.

It is possible to further classify the vegetarian group, depending on the types of foods that are eaten. Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat, but will consume eggs and most dairy products. Vegans stay on strict diets that allow no meats or meat by-products. Dairy, eggs, cheese, natural gelatin and even foods cooked with lard are carefully avoided.

Getting enough protein is a challenge faced by many vegetarians. Most meat-eating Americans consume far more protein on a daily basis than is actually needed. A lacto-ovo vegetarian can easily meet his or her protein requirements with a dairy-rich diet, while vegans can eat seeds, nuts and soy products to obtain their protein.

You probably already know that beans are also excellent source of protein. Just one cup of cooked beans can contain the same amount of protein as two ounces of meat. Protein-rich beans include split peas and chick peas, red and green lentils, soy beans and others. Kidney beans make a great meat replacement in chili. Refried beans are a delicious staple for many Mexican dishes. Nuts can also be a good protein source, but they're also high in fat and should be eaten moderately.

The nutritious areas of most concern for vegans are vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D. The primary source of vitamin B12 in the average North American diet is meat, so vegans should regularly consume soy products or take vitamin B12 supplements to meet their daily requirements.

It's easy to get calcium if you are able to consume milk and other dairy products, but vegans don't have this option. Vegan-friendly options are calcium-fortified soy milk and orange juice. Some vegetables like leafy greens, beans and broccoli are also high in calcium.

The average vegetarian diet is based on a few simple food groups, so it's important to maintain control over your intake of vitamins and calcium. By supplementing your healthy vegetarian diet with additional nutrients, you can easily maintain overall wellness.

By taking control of what you eat today, you can ensure many years of health ahead

When looking at a vegetarian resource center your whole intention is to find an informative info at your finger tips to help with your new lifestyle change. Info like nutritional facts will be so beneficial. Try to find a resource center that is non-profit, that way it should dedicated to your education, not to someone's pocket.

A how to group for Vegans will be a great help with all the challenges of your meat eating friends. Use the resource center as a place for new ideas for them and new foods for self. It's like a fact center just for you, use it.

Vegetarian standards are different according to the vegetarian society, such as terms like vegetarian or vegan. The vegan is the higher standard vegetarain but the later is the minimum vegetarian. There is so much confusion over those terms, even in food labels.

Vegetarians that are the minimalist would eat eggs and cheese because it does not cause the death of an animal. Simple meals like tomato sauce and pasta has been an easy one for years. A food that is more of a cuisine is the Middle Eastern foods because they are innovational in taste.

Being a vegetarian is easy; it will not be a pain to do at all. Most of my adult life I was not a vegetarian, I listened to the claim that you need to eat meat for more muscle to grow. Then I hear the statement of cows just eat grass and look at all the meat they supply. Farms growing what we need has kept us hear for thousands of years.

Vegetarian dietary practices have the potentially to save so much in health care costs. There would be less cancer without the fat from the meat. Heart disease and obesity would be far less; sorry I am getting on a rant.

If you try to cram yourself with all the vegetarian facts at once you will indeed overwhelm yourself. So do yourself a favor and take the lifestyle in slowly. Start making small changes like added more salads to your meals and eating more mushrooms with your meals. Making gradual changes like this is best when starting something new.

So do you want a healthier lifestyle? A permanent reduction in your weight, blood pressure, maybe cholesterol should sound good. The meat industry wants you to think you are going to fall over without it. Your diet will be mostly the same things you already enjoy with fruits and vegetables that you eat today.
