These conditions include congestive heart failure and kidney disease. Diuretics prompt your body to produce and eliminate more urine, which helps lower blood pressure. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. The effect may be prolonged beyond 24 hours particularly at the higher recommended dosages.
