[S591]Small Business Management An Entrepreneurs Guidebook
by Brent Crouch, Bre
Making the decision to start your own business from home as an eBay seller is a big one. While some people choose to open their own business as a way to increase their income, some people do so as a whole new career. These folks often wonder if they need to brush up on the basics of owning a small business by taking a few classes at their local college or university. Let's take a look at both sides of this issue and see if we can come up with an answer.

One of the most difficult parts of running your own business is keeping track of the books. This is why when most people can afford to hire a second person, the first person they hire is an accountant. If your business is still somewhat small, it shouldn't be too hard to keep track of your books, but by taking a few small business classes, you can learn better organization and better techniques that you can use to keep all of your numbers straight. By always knowing the standing of your books, you can get a proper look at how profitable your business really is.

One of the biggest arguments against spending the money to take small business classes is the idea of simply learning as you go. The overwhelming majority of eBay sellers haven't taken a single business class in their lives. They are simply regular folks who are passionate about the products they sell and are determined to make as much money as they can. They don't deny that once in a while you may run into a circumstance where a formal, classroom education might help, but no professor can prepare you for every eventuality you might face, so why not simply dive in and see what happens.

One class that many people think could be helpful is one on online advertising. Since you don't ever see ads for eBay stores on billboards or in the newspaper, most eBay store owners choose to advertise online, but since online dynamics are always changing and new technology is constantly coming out, it can be dizzying keeping up with ad rates along with everything else. A class in online advertising can teach you where you should advertise and where you should save your money. An online store is only as good as the amount of business it does, and you can't do any business if people don't know you're there.

Finally, many people realize that once they start their online store that it isn't nearly as complicated as they thought. Many experienced sellers tell others that the initial set up and the first few orders are difficult because you aren't familiar with the process. Once you start selling, you may realize that you didn't need any extra help after all.

Education is always beneficial, but if you are considering spending money you don't have to brush up on your business acumen before you start your eBay based business, you may want to put that money towards something that will help you more in the end.
