[S531]Ski Les Deux Alpes
by Alex Gwen Thomson, Ale
Since everything goes in pairs here, Les 2 Alpes is popular for two reasons. First, we find here Europe's largest glacier, Mont-de-Lans. This glacier has the advantage to offers lots of open spaces to skiers. Second, Les 2 Alpes is one of the oldest ski resorts of France (in fact, it is the second oldest after Chamonix), which adds to its greatness and its charm.

Les 2 Alpes resort's altitude is ranging from 1650 meters to 3568 meters and the longest run lasts an amazing 12 km. There are 100 pistes, for a total of 225 km, divided as such: 13 black runs, 19 red, 47 blue and 21 green runs. With its 51 lifts, the resort has an uphill capacity of over 65,000 skiers and boarders per hour, and it becomes necessary during high season.

Infants as young as 6 months old can be looked after in one of the nurseries, as long as parents provide all required documents. At three years of age, they can start learning the basics of skiing or snowboarding in one of the two La Plagne ski schools, and there is no maximum age to learn new skills! For kids aged from 6 to 12 who want a break from ski or snowboard, the Centre de loisirs (recreation center) is offering activities on Wednesdays and Sundays, outdoors or indoors depending on the weather conditions.

For breathtaking sightseeing, ride The Dome Express, an underground funicular railway opened in the late 1990s. It operates both in winter and summer, transporting sightseers up to almost 3500 meters, where they can photograph the amazing panorama. When the sky is clear"generally mornings are unclouded"Mont Blanc can be seen over 100 km away. In the winter, however, the top is regularly closed due to unpredictable weather conditions.

In the Les 2 Alpes resort, snowboarders are as welcomed as skiers, and it has been the case for more than a decade. Thus, boarders can access many areas specially designed of them: a boarder cross, a half pipe, different parks, etc. They can also ride the Slide Zone and hurtle down a 185-meter drop with canyons, waterfalls and ledges. It is to be noted that the boarder cross course is not groomed throughout the day and this lack of maintenance gives way to several daily changes in the land.

If you are not completely exhausted from your day and you want to get a bit of après-ski action, Les 2 Alpes has what it takes to satisfy you. There are many restaurants directly accessible from the slopes and even more in town, and for all tastes! Among the about 50 venues in town are crèperies, pizzerias, cafes, fine cuisine restaurants and raclette joints. The resort also has two discotheques and two dozens of bars and pubs.
