[T42]Tanning Beds And Skin
by Larry Scott, Lar

While there is no definitive evidence that tanning beds and pregnancy don't mix, there are some common sense concerns that you need to be aware of:

  1. One real concern for pregnant women is that of becoming overheated or dehydrated while using a tanning bed. Overheating is associated with spinal malformations in unborn babies, and dehydration can lead to premature labor.
  2. Especially during the later months of pregnancy, lying on a flat tanning bed can create significant pressure on the lower back and reduce the blood flow to your heart and to the baby.
  3. The UV rays that give you a great tan can also lead to a folic acid deficiency. This type of deficiency can lead to neural tube defects, especially during the first trimester.
  4. During pregnancy, your skin may be more sensitive to the UV rays, leading to hives, a rash, or chloasma, which are dark splotches on your skin.
  5. Not all pregnant women get stretch marks, but those who do will tell you that tanning can make the stretch marks appear more prominent.

A better answer for expectant mothers may be to take advantage of spray on tanning booths or self-tanning products. These products that are applied to the skin have not been found to have adverse affects on a growing fetus and do not elevate a woman's body temperature.

For many, a terrific tan equates to looking healthy, but when it comes to pregnancy, it is better to sacrifice the convenience of tanning beds than to take a chance on harming your baby. Look for alternative means of tanning or treat yourself to a massage or pedicure to compensate for the stress-relief you may normally feel when using a tanning bed.

Do you happen to be the type who can't live without a healthy tan? If so, then you are probably well aware of the costs involved in a tanning membership. Not only do you have to pay the package prices, but cost of gas, time, and wear/tear on your car can add up fast. The cost of tanning packages are raising due to their demand, don't you think it's wise to invest in your very own residential tanning bed? Easily financed, tanning at home can cost you hundreds or thousands over years to come.

Benefits That Result From Purchasing a Residential Tanning Bed.

A personal tanning bed has numerous benefits over the salon alternative. The amount of time you save from traveling to and from the salon can add up quick, especially if the salon is at the other end of town! You also get the added benefit of being the sole user of the bed. Since you are in control, you can be sure it is always clean. Also the obvious cost savings in the long run are an added benefit. Buying packages every month can get spendy, especially with today's increasing prices. You are also in control of maintenance. This can also be a headache, but you can rest assured that you aren't walking into a bed with only half of the bulbs working. For anyone that is a paying member of a tanning salon, this can be a common occurrence.

Indoor Tanning Pros and Cons.

Tanning does have its benefits, such as a glowing healthy tan, vitamin D production, and decreased symptoms of psoriasis. It is also known to increase your endorphin level, the happy hormone. However, tanning is not without risks. Premature aging, risk of burns, and cancer all fall into the unwanted side effect category.

Having your own personal tanning bed isn't without its faults either. Most salons require protective gear such as eye goggles and lotion. Without this watchful eye, it can be easy to slip into your bed without the proper protection. Over time you will see the detrimental side effects of not using lotion, eyewear, and lip protectant. Fortunately residential tanning beds are not as powerful as commercial beds, mostly due to the latter reason.

Be sure to use extreme caution, whether using a salon bed or a residential tanning bed. Proper tanning techniques can give you years of a healthy glowing tan with minimal risks!
