[S895]Start A Home Based Business Online
by Jeffrey Roh, Jef
Don't read anymore if that is you.

However, if you are like countless others who have taken the first step to true financial independence, then you may get some value by reading on. I belong to the group that has said no more!" to the corporate world and started a home based business. I can't tell you if the move is right for you, but I can give you some questions to ask yourself from my experience.

Starting a business is not for everyone, and that is okay. A lot of people have big dreams but the reality of what it takes doesn't always lend itself to those dreams. But for those you can make it a reality, you just might tell yourself one day that it was the best move you ever made!

So now imagine you are the boss of the business you want to start and you are hiring yourself. What kind of questions would you ask your prospective employee ( you! )?

Do you have the right attitude?

Anything in life worth having takes work, and a home based business is no exception. If anyone tries to sell you some program that claims you can make 1000's of dollars a day with no effort, stay away! In the beginning, you will have to put effort into it. Yes, one day it may get easier and you may make 1000's per day, but that only comes with time and hard work. You need to view a home based business as just that....a business, and not a hobby. Be professional, think why someone would need your product or services, what kind of value do you bring to your client? Why should someone buy from you? View this as a job with regular hours and a work week....do all of these things and you will give yourself a good mindset. Have fun...after all, you are creating financial freedom for yourself....but be able to answer the question, if you were a client, would you want to do business with yourself?

Do you have a plan?

You know what your goal is, but how are you goint to meet that goal? Often a home business starts out as a hobby or a part-time endeavor and somewhere along the way you realize, hey...I just might be able to make money with this. Too many people fail to plan, and that is just planning to fail. What are your goals? Be specific.... A goal is not "I want to make a lot of money"...there is no definite number, there is no actual attainable thing that you can push yourself to reach and then say "I did it.A better goal is "I want to make $3000 by my 4th month in business", or something like that. When you put a number and a deadline to it, the rest is easy. This will help you determine what tasks you need to perform to achieve your goal. And once you do, it is time to set the bar higher!

Are you disciplined enough?

This was the hardest one for me, and it might just be for you too. When you start a home business, most of the time you don't have someone to tell you what to do. You're the boss! You are the boss...you have to tell yourself what to do. If you work from home, it is very tempting to do a little work, then watch tv, or clean the house, or take a nap....you get the picture. Sure, it's okay to do a little of that, after all, that is one of the benefits from working from home. You have to "go to work" if you want to make money with a home based business." Just like clocking in at your corporate job. Give yourself a daily task that relates to what you need to do to achieve your goals. When I started my home based business, I first said "I want to sign my first client in the first 3 months." Then I sat down to figure out what kind of marketing I needed to do, who I should target. I gave myself weekly or daily tasks....I am going to make twenty phone calls per day, or write one article per day, or spend 1 hour adding content to my website. Do this, and you will hold yourself accountable and create the discipline. Write your daily and weekly tasks down and check them off as you go.

Can you stomach the upfront costs in time and money?

Finally, how is your threshold for pain? I don't want to scare you, but you need to know that you will spend a lot of time getting everything off the ground. You will probably need to spend money to get started. You will make mistakes and find things that work and don't work by trial and error. The industry I started one of my home based businesses in, it is not uncommon to take 6-12 months to get your first client. I signed my first one in 4 months, but I was spending time and money all that time to market to my audience. Can you imagine how scary that was? After 3 months with nothing to show for it, there were several times I had doubts, I felt like packing it up and cutting my losses. But had I quit, I would have missed out just a month later.

Someone once said most people quit before they cross the goal line...what will you do when there are disappointments and setbacks? Can you keep charging ahead when things are tough?

If so, then congratulations! You have a good grasp of what it takes to finally create financial freedom and put yourself on course to success as a home business owner.

This article exposes practical day to day tips in maintaining and operating your home based legitimate business online to it's optimum. These are tips from my own personal experiences after being a full time internet marketer for a few years now. Though logical and simple, they are often overlooked by even the more experienced home based business online owners.

Let's start with your computer. How old is it? If it's more than 4 years old, up-grade it if you can or better still change it. Look, you don't want to run an online business with an unreliable computer. Trust me you, this will be worth it. A little tip before on purchasing a new computer. If it runs on Windows Vista, make sure the RAM size is 2GB or more. Lower than that and your computer will be sluggish. If you are a notebook person like me, make sure to test the screen size you are most comfortable with. A 13.3inch is the smallest I would go. Smaller and it would strain your eyes.

Are you promoting affiliate programs? I promote loads of them and that's why I keep a database of all the programs I am affiliated to in a simple spreadsheet. I include in it the affiliate manager's url, my affiliate links, login ID, login password, their support email addresses, email address I used to subscribe to them, payment gateways, payment received, payment pending and remarks. This will give you an easy reference and a good way to monitor your paychecks. OpenOffice offers a free spreadsheet software download at their homepage.

With the exception of IT personnels, this is the one thing most people do not do. As a home based legitimate business online owner, your database is your goldmine. For example, I keep a database of my newsletter subscribers, affiliate programs (above) and hosting directories. You should too and always have a backup copy. You can even store them in a DVD-ROM. Just burn it. To make your job easier, store all your critical files in a common directory. I save all my home based business online related files in a directory called "IM" for internet marketing. When I do a backup, I just copy the whole file. Simple right.

Here's another one. Make sure your site is up and running. Test it at least once a day. Make sure your site opens up when you enter your site url in the web browser. After it does, do a random check on the links you have on your site to ensure there are no broken links. If there are then fix them. The links could have been changed without your knowledge. There are softwares available in the market you can use to check this for you, but a random manual check is recommended. The plus point to this is, you tend to spend more time on your site hence, can easily identify discrepancies and rectify them if any.

Above are the checklist I live by to maintain the smooth operation of my home based legitimate business online. Though not often being highlighted as part of a marketing strategy, yet can mean the survival of your home based business online venture.
