The conscious: that is our awake state, and the subconscious: the deepest levels of the mind, the level of our powerful inner mind.
Now I would like to transcribe you the testimony of one of my students:
"For fifty five years I had being dreaming to have a couple; in several opportunities I had short period relationships, that vanished in the air.
It had finally arrived to the idea that I was going to be a spinster for the rest of my life. But after practicing during one year as you taught me, the incredible thing happened: my personality began to change little by little, as all my friends commented me.
At this time I can tell you with great happiness that I have already been married for one month with a wonderful man that has changed the sense of my life. Nora
All of us in some moment of our lives, make plans for the road that we seek to travel in our existence, and we tell ourselves things as:
* "I would like to get marry" (as Nora said to herself during fifty five years) * "I would like to have several children" * "I would like to be a healthy person" * "I seek to have a monthly income that allows me to save every month a small amount to use in trips or buy goods, etc.
Perhaps after this we could think that the best we can do to achieve our goals is that we follow an university career. So we will do it, and we will work with all the strength of our will, with all our physical energy, with all the acquired university knowledge, and with that maximum ten percent of our brain capacity that we can use when we are awake, to achieve our goals.
Let us suppose now for a moment that our inner mind, to our powerful subconscious mind, due to some unpleasant experience that we have had in our childhood, decides that:
* He doesn't want to get married * He doesn't want to have children * He doesn't want to be healthy, because he likes to be cared of * He doesn't want to have too much money to avoid the risk of being abducted
And to accomplish it he uses that ninety percent of our cerebral capacity that we don't usually use.. Who do you think will win?
I believe that you will have no doubts that in a fight of nine against one, the subconscious mind is the one that's going to win. And that perhaps, at most, you will get transitory successes (as Nora did).
After reading this paragraph, you will surely begin to realize the reason why in many opportunities, you might say to yourself: "now I will go toward the north and will finish going toward the south...
And then again you will try to go to the north and once again you will go toward the south... Because our good purposes and even our hard work can very well be beaten by the strength of the powerful subconscious mind.
But then we have the enemy at home! you might think... And the answer some times will be a YES, and some times will be a NO.
Our subconscious is not really our enemy, because he will never do something that he considers noxious for us. But his point of view can coincide or not with the one that we have NOW; and his strength can become our biggest ally, or our worst enemy.
You should notice that I have highlighted the word NOW, because the decisions that the subconscious mind take, cannot be defined as simply capricious, but adjusted to the subconscious logic in the moment that they were taken (maybe when we where 5 years old).
As humans we are very impressed with our ability to reason and view this skill as the determining factor in our decision making process. It appears, however, that this belief - that we control our thoughts and our thoughts control our behavior - is simply wrong.
Research now supports the notion that it is the unconscious mind that controls most of our behavior. And since everything that happens unconsciously is, by definition, outside the boundaries of awareness, it begs the questions: What is actually happening down there?
Well, as it turns out, there's a whole lot!! There's an ever growing body of neuropsychological research to suggest that most of what we do every minute of every day is unconscious.
Issues such as how we make snap decisions, why we are uncomfortable in a situation without any obvious cause, what motivates us and a host of other aspects of our lives are all controlled by unconscious processes.
Main stream media is now paying more and more attention to this fascinating area of human behavior primarily because it's not just speculation or inference anymore, it's supported by hard neuroscience. U.S. New & World Report dedicated its February 28th cover story to the topic. (click here to read the USNWR article www.usnews.com/usnews/health/articles/050228/28think.htm )
What was most interesting in the U.S. News & World Report article was the research suggesting that the brain is wired to perceive metaphors. Concepts such as energy, control and connection are organic (my word) and resonate deeply inside of all of us. Within this same unconscious framework, we are also drawn to heroic myths as well as concepts such as journey and transformation.
For those of you who are familiar with hypnosis and especially with Dr. Lloyd Glaubermans "Hypno-periperal Processing" you are aware that their audio process is built on a mytho-metaphoric framework and structured to tap into these very unconscious processes that are responsible for our behavior. ...and that they have a package that is custom built for sales people and anyone wanting to be more persuasive.
I think you'll be delighted to see the work Dr. Glauberman is doing now that there is a growing body of research that supports the efficacy of the technology that we have developed and refined over the past fifteen years. Go ahead and check it out.
