[S1171]Surgery For Inguinal Hernia
by Groshan Fabiola, Gro
One of the most common cases of hernia is the inguinal hernia. This is a bulge in your abdomen, in the groin area to be more precise. When the walls of your abdomen are weak, because of different causes, small parts of the intestine or tissues protrude through this area. This is a hernia. When the location of your hernia is the groin, the term used is inguinal hernia.

The only hernia treatment that is used today is surgery. However, a hernia repair is actually a simple surgery that does not require hospitalization. Of course, the hernia repair is an open surgery. Anaesthesia is a must in a hernia repair procedure, but a local one might be more than enough. However, before anaesthesia, the hernia patient is asked not to drink or eat anything six hours prior. Of course, in case the hernia patient must have a general anaesthesia. You might be one of the lucky one that are allowed to have some sips of water about two hours before the hernia anaesthesia, but this depends on the your anaesthetic.

There are two types of hernia repair procedures that are most frequently used: the open surgery and the keyhole procedure. The last hernia procedure is less indicated by some doctors, because the risk of damaging some of the neighbor organs is greater than the open hernia procedure. As time estimation, both hernia procedures last about half an hour. If you have an open hernia procedure, the doctor will make a cut that is about ten centimeters long. Through this cut, your doctor will then push the hernia back to its original place and then use stitches to close the gap that the hernia has created. In some hernia cases, some reinforcement might also be necessary. In the end, the doctor will lose stitch up the incision that he/ she made and the hernia surgery is then over.

The second option that a hernia patient has is the keyhole surgery. In this case, the doctor makes a very small cut just right near your umbilicus and then inserts a tube in. Gas may be used to give your doctor a better view of the organs. Then, through that tube, the doctor will insert certain instruments that are needed to make the hernia repair. Both these hernia repair procedures are very easy, but some doctors may have more experience in one of the procedures then in the other. There are also some other factors to take into consideration when deciding on what type of hernia repair to choose. The best thing to do is discuss it with your doctor.

Inguinal hernia occurs when some of the tissue that is part of the intestine pushes through a spot in the abdominal wall. As a result, severe pain can appear. Pain increases if someone who suffers from inguinal hernia lifts something heavy, coughs or makes some specific types of movements.

Inguinal hernia symptoms are different from one person to another, so you can't say that there are some signs that appear at everyone suffering from this hernia, but there are some that manifest quite often. So what is listed here does not have to apply to you. For information that applies to you, visit your doctor.
The most common inguinal hernia symptoms are groin pain and lump and intestinal blockage in severe cases. Men often complained of pain in the scrotum. The most common symptom is a large bulge that can easily be seen and felt.

The disease itself is not dangerous, but if it is not treated it may lead to severe complications that may even lead to death in some extreme cases.
This is why doctors recommend surgery as soon as inguinal hernia is starting to cause pain or it is starting to grow.
In the past, the surgery for inguinal hernia involved a large opening in the abdomen followed by a long time spent in the hospital for recovery, but nowadays the surgical tehniques have improved a lot and the operation can be done in a much easier way and without weeks of recovery in the hospital.

Even some children have been diagnosticated with inguinal hernia but these cases were rare. Inguinal hernia can sometimes appear at newborns because the abdominal wall is weak at birth. It can easily be detected because the bulge created is visible, especially when the child coughs.
