by CD Mohatta, CD
Tretinoin is a retinoid. Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A and therefore their action is very similar to Vitamin A. Tretinoin can cause some side effects but its benefits out weigh the side effects. Let us find out more about Tretinoin.

How Tretinoin acts-

Tretinoin repairs the damage to the skin by rapidly renewing the skin cells. The turnover of skin cells increase with use of Tretinoin and the old blemishes slowly disappear, because the new skin does not have old defects.

Topical tretinoin is used for treatment of sun damage, fine wrinkles and lines, blotches and acne. Tretinoin is one of the most effective medicines for acne. It removes the skin oils and stops acne formation by rapidly removing the old skin cells.

Tretinoin should be used daily or on alternate days at the bedtime. Tretinoin may have to be used for a year or more to remove all the skin imperfections.

Tretinoin makes skin more sensitive to sun. Therefore while using tretinoin, sun protection is necessary. Tretinoin also dries the skin and a moisturizer may need to be used to keep skin supple.

You should talk to your doctor about the oral Vitamins you may be taking. If you are taking oral Vitamin a, that may cause problems. Tretinoin may also cause itching and redness if it is used along with products that may contain skin-drying agents such as Sulphur, alcohol, etc.

When you are serious about acne cure, you will have to get it treated in a right way through proper medication. The right doses of medicines have to be taken in to keep acne miles apart.

There are broadly two types of medicines to treat acne. The prescribed medicines are given to you by the dermatologists. But there is also a wide range of non-prescribed medicines that can cure acne if they are in the mild form or initial stage.

Easy and safe: The non-prescribed course

-Benzoyl peroxide is a chemical component present in many soaps and skin cleansers and ointments. This is very effective in curing acne. How does it prevent the growth? Interestingly the benzoyl peroxide doesn't inhibit the acne but the bacteria that help in the formation of acne. Thus the root cause is brought under control.

-There is another big role of benzoyl peroxide to play on your skin. The chemical actually helps in absorption of the oiliness in your skin making it dry. And if the skin doesn't retain extra oil, the chances of the pores to get plugged will automatically get reduced.

Curing acne from roots: The prescribed dose

-The doctors prefer the antibiotics the most. Antibiotics ? from the name itself you know that they are bacteria killers. And bacteria have a close association with acne growth. The dermatologists prescribe antibiotics both in the ointment form as well as in the medicine form. As per the prescription you will have to use the antibiotic lotion regularly and take the pills in time. Combining both the treatment methods result in a better manner. Therefore it is suggested to use the topical antibiotic pills with the topical benzoyl lotion.

-Vitamin A is great acne preventive. Retinoid is often prescribed by the doctor as a medical curing dose for acne. There is a special type of retinoid known as Topical retinoid. This is quite effective in clearing the blackheads and the whiteheads from the skin. Retinoid consumed orally are helpful to keep your skin oil-free. If this can be achieved, the acne hardly gets a chance to form on your skin.

Thus both the prescribed and the non-prescribed forms of medication for acne primarily target to prevent the oiliness of your skin. If the root is damaged, the shoot can never turn up. This is the easy medical rule as well.
