[S1137]Summer Fashion Trends 2009
by Keith Jacobsen Sr., Kei
A generally global theme

The world is finally coming together on the environmental front and its showing up in fashion trends for summer 2008. Outspoken calls for the environment are not necessarily the trend in this regard to fashion but rather a more personal responsibility will be found. Consecutiveness is often found to be the word of choice as the summer offerings hit the stores. What this happens to mean is anybody’s guess but a balance between elements of style may be as good a guess as any. Wearing any one element in favor of showing off another is definitely not the way to go. Bling may be in, in some circles, but where fashion on a regular basis is concerned balance of a personal mood is the way to go. Colors are available across a wide spectrum but they are not overwhelming. A high energy is there but blasting out that I am here is not a prevalent trend.

Color to prints, it's all there

The high energy of color is being found in the deep rich hues that the colors bring. They offer a muted tone but a deep rich powerful color. The entire color wheel is available in solids and prints with solids offering a wider range. Lilac appears to be one of the more romantic colors being pushed for the summer 2008 season; while Blue Iris, Shady Glade, Caribbean Sea and Aurora Red are great examples of summer colors geared toward a simple sophisticated season. Print colors are also finding favor this summer season. The colors are essentially the same although they are being combined in many ways to come up with unique forms and energies. Generally, this summer season is not finding overpowering prints with most indicating that a little goes a long way.

Is it wearable?

Following in much the same tone are offerings that are more wearable then in the past. Tight minis are gone unless you care to make a fairly bold statement. Instead, is it wearable?, can often be heard to be asked. Can the skirt go to work and then be carried through to evening? Does it flow? In a certain sense, it appears that a softer sexuality is returning to the season and it’s coming at around the knee and just above with a flowing less tight feel and look.

Transparently tasteful

The wearability trend, however, does go to the entire extreme. Shear fabrics are also being offered for this summer season. Sometime you just want to push the envelope a bit and show yourself off. These fabrics will help you to do just that. Not going to far and understanding how to wear it are essential. Not to tight but loose and flirty is the word in this regard. Overall, taste is the word of the season, especially with the sheer fabrics.

Utility ready

Safari has managed to stay a trend in the summer selling season 2008. Utility has been added to this perpetual summer classic in no small part to technology and the gadgets that are always found to be indispensible. A strategic pocket for this electronic product or that is almost required in the new offerings for summer but not at the expense of fashion utility. Most of the safari offerings are also being geared for day/night use with the addition of simple and understated accessories/shoes.

Walking into a statement

The shoe season is expected to be one of the statement shoes. Taller wearers will be sticking with flats but in a large variety of colors. If they prefer to go with a longer look then they may already have they can easily join the rest of the crowd with 4" stilettos and chunky sandals. Sandals in general will be pervasive with a full range of styles, colors and strap configurations. Their use will be seen from suits to dresses as more feminine looks gravitate toward the Grecian goddess look.

Grecian romance

A clean romantic line is the word of the season for those desiring a romantic and alluring look. Light and airy with a taste of ruffles will set off a clean silhouette when a hot evening and an even hotter date present themselves. The hint in this regard is don't overdo it and keep the accessories to a minimum.

Beach shoes have evolved significantly over the last few years. Gone are the days when flip-flops and Birkenstock’s (remember that not all Birkenstock’s are waterproof so choose the ones you’ll wear to the beach wisely) were your only option. Though who can really live without a nice comfy pair of Birkenstock’s or 12? Today there are all kinds of shoes made specifically to wear to the beach.

From netted athletic shoes made for running and walking just along the edge of the water to jelly shoes, flip-flops, and dozens of varieties in between it is now more than ever possible to not only have shoes that are practical to wear to the beach, but fashionable in this endeavor as well.

Shoes say a lot about the wearer, there is really no exception for beach shoes. Any old flip-flops say the wearer isn’t very concerned about their foot fashion. Of course there are flip-flops with embellishments that make them a little more fashionable than the dollar store variety. A nice pair of Birkenstock’s says the wearer is wisely more concerned with quality and comfort than following trends. Impractical beach shoes or those that are likely to need repairs after coming into contract with water and/or sand say the owner has more money than sense. And shoes that are funky and fashionable and made for the beach say the wearer is fashionably chic.

When choosing the right beach shoes for you it is important that you consider what your beachside activities are going to be. If you want to run along the shoreline, you might want to purchase a pair of the beach friendly athletic shoes that are relatively new. If you want to be fashionable go for some of the trendy beach shoes, if you want the ultimate in comfort go for a nice pair of Birkenstock’s, and flip-flops are always an old fall back that have been the shoe of choice of beach goers for ages.
