It exists since the 16th century but has become important in the days of Friedrich the Great.

The Linden tree represents the ancient goddess Freyja, the goddess of love, lust, and fortune. They are supposed to have a protective power against evil and catastrophe.

The linden (lime) trees became the symbol of the place, and for that exactly it had been cut down by Hitler and the Nazis later on. Most of the buildings along UDL were destroyed in WW2. Some were reconstructed, others built anew. The trees were planted again.

There is a lot to see on this one boulevard: from Brandenburgh Gate, through the famous Einstein Café, to the Humbuldt University. And there are St. Hedwig cathedral and the Neue Wache memorial, and the New Art Academy, and many other beautiful places.
