Lodging and food will need to be in the budget first. Once you have taken care of those needs you really don't need to spend much more. You'll find many things to do, interesting and fun, as you stay and play in the Nation's oldest city.
*Mission Nombre de Dios (free) - Stand just about anywhere in St. Augustine and you will see the 200' cross that marks this historic site. It is on these grounds that Pedro Menendez landed in 1565. Shortly after landing his Chaplin, Father Lopez, held the first Catholic Mass in America. Plan to spend a few hours visiting this beautiful area.
*St. George Street (free) - This is one of several wonderful little streets throughout the downtown historic area. Old houses line each side of the street. Many have unique shops in the lower level with apartments above. You'll enjoy wandering down this lovely street.
*Saint Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine (free) - Be sure to stop in and visit this beautiful Shrine that is dedicated to the first colony of Greeks who arrived in America in 1768. The Byzantine style frescoes are simply breathtaking. There is also a gift shop filled with wonderful Greek treasures. Don't miss this one!
*San Sebastian Winery (free) - I know, it doesn't seem possible but there are fine wines produced right here in Florida. This local award winning winery grows several hundred acres of muscadine grapes from which they make their wine. Tours and tastings are available every day.
*Trains and Trolleys - This is the way to see St. Augustine. Yes, there is a charge but I believe it is a bargain. Your tickets are valid for three days and each company will send a shuttle to pick you up, wherever you are staying, and take you back after a day of sightseeing. There are over 20 stops throughout town to step off, visit, then step back on and continue. It is also a great way to learn the history from licensed tour guides.
There is so much to see and do in St. Augustine, Florida and as you can see it won't cost you a fortune. This is the perfect time to plan a fun and interesting vacation in the Nation's Oldest City.
