[S941]State Capital Of Mexico
by Douglas Scott, Dou
Today a large and modern industrial centre, sprawling across a wide plain. At an altitude of nearly 2700m, it is the highest city in the country, and comes surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, dominated by the white capped Nevado de Toluca.

Toluca has an international airport named Aeropuerto Internacional Adolfo Lopez Mateos, located 10 kilometres from the cities centre.

Toluca can be reached by train, but automobile is preferable. You can either hire a private car or take advantage of one of the organized excursions operated by a tourist company.

Famous for its connections to the automotive industry, the town is peaceful while still lively. Toluca while not exactly a tourist must see is still well worth the effort of a visit, especially the Cosmovitral, at the Jardin Botanico, a truly beautiful work of art in glass.

The markets and outlying areas are the places to go for budget food, while around the portals there are some good, pricier choices.

The climate is the coolest of any large Mexican city due to its high altitude above sea level. Despite its southerly latitude, on winter nights temperatures can drop well below 0 and even in summer it can cool down to almost freezing, while maximum temperatures rarely exceed 27C . The climate is prone to extended dry periods particularly in winter, precipitation during winter usually falls as snow in the highlands around Toluca but it also receives rainfall during the summer months.

Visitors will be able to enjoy themselves at the most as they would in any of the most important cities of the world, thanks to Tolucas unbeatable richness, history, culture, gastronomy, recreational spaces and its favourable geographic location that makes it an important national destination.

In Toluca it there is only one great sight, the market that is held on Fridays, which is probably one of the best stocked and surely the most picturesque market in all Mexico.

While many nations live to work, Mexico does the opposite. The people are vivacious lovers of free time and socialising, and work will never have the importance that friends and family do.

Mexico offers a variety of exciting activities. Travellers can explore ancient archaeological zones, glide through the hills of Toluca or walk around the charming cobblestone streets of Valle de Bravo.
