[S1086]Student Health Insurance Policy
by C. Ray Sondeo, C.
Insurance coverage for visitors is similar to other insurance coverage. The only real difference is that visitor insurance is for a determinate length of time while traveling or on vacation. You can use this type of insurance to give an added measure of security should you have health problems while away from home. Without this type of insurance there won't be any kind of security for you should you have an accident or illness.

Many people feeling rushed select an inappropriate plan for their needs. They select one that will be effective for their situation. The terms and conditions can be confusing and you may find you are in need of more coverage than you purchased. Care should be taken that you have a thorough understanding of the plan that you choose. Only then should you make a choice.

We will look at 2 varieties of plans available for visitors health insurance. Fixed benefit plans and comprehensive benefit plans. Fixed benefits mean that the insurance will payout only to a certain limit covered by the policy. Each section of the plan has a set amount that can be paid out from it. The amounts are determined by the policy you buy. The documents you receive when buying the policy contain the details of these amounts so be sure to read the documentation thoroughly so you will be familiar with what is covered and how much is allowed under each section.

You may find that the features that distinguish a comprehensive policy are more attractive to you but you will have to be willing to pay a higher premium for the enhanced policy. With the comprehensive plan you are not limited in individual categories but only by the overall limits to the policy that are set when you purchase the policy. This is beneficial should you have a serious accident, injury or illness that would require more coverage than is available in the individual categories as described for the limited coverage policy.

Each company's insurance plans come with their own documents detailing each aspect of the policy and what is covered with the policy. The documents give you all the details of what is covered for each medical treatment. For instance, your insurance might cover a prescription for medication, or a death due to an accident, or serious injuries caused by a transportation accident. They might also cover the cancellation of a trip or expenses from the delay of a trip.

In ordered to take advantage of the many wonderful benefits of having visitors health insurance you need to be sure to get the right plan from the right insurance company. With the wrong policy you won't be able to enjoy the full benefits. Once you get the policy, take time to study the paper work, read it thoroughly. If you do this you can help keep your family secure as you travel in another country.

Tip #3 - Check on Prescription Coverage - When you are considering various health insurance policies you may want to see if the company offers prescription coverage with your plan. Paying for prescriptions on your own can get very expensive over the course of a year. Having a prescription coverage plan can save you a great deal of money in the long run, even though it may cost you a bit more in the beginning.

Tip #4 - Check the Companies Record - If you want to make sure that you get the best health insurance possible you may want to check into the record of the company. Take a look at the ratings of this company by independent associations. You may also want to take a look at what previous customers have to say about the company as well. If there are many people that had a problem with the insurance company, you may want to look somewhere else for your health insurance policy.

Tip #5 - Find Out if Preventive Care is Available - There are many insurance companies that may have a great plan, but if you look real closely you may find out that they do not cover preventive care. Preventive care includes things like yearly physicals and are a very important part of health care. You will want to find a company that does offer preventive care as part of your plan. Some companies are going the extra mile and not only covering yearly physicals, but are also covering flu shots, gym costs, and other preventive health measures.

Tip #6 - Compare - Those who are choosing a health insurance policy need to make sure that they take the time to compare various companies and what they have to offer. Even if you have found a great plan for your needs with one company, you should still check around and see what other companies have to offer you. Many times taking the time to compare companies can help you save hundreds of dollars each year. Be sure to compare the costs of the policy and what the policy covers as well.
