[S1069]Stress Good And Bad
by Victor Ezeaku, Vic

The term stress is now part and parcel of our life.  It is not possible for one to do without stress in our present world.  Although stress is beneficial to man, its negative effects are also enormous.  Hardly can minutes past without one experiencing one form of stress or the other.  Whenever we go about for our various daily chores, we must encounter one form of stress or the other.

Do you know that stress can be both good and bad to man?  Yes! Stress can be beneficial and harmful to man.  Normally, we need some little amount of stress if we must live.  On the other hand, when stress becomes too much for us, it becomes a disease.

When stress is beyond the coping capability of an individual, it turns from been beneficial to been harmful.  Thus, enormous dose of stress is pathological while small dose of stress is very vital for maintenance of normal life processes.

Just as the saying that one man's poison is another man's meat; what could be stress to an individual could turn out not to be stress to another individual.  To some individuals, going to the stadium to watch a football match might just be fun but for another person going to the stadium might just be stress.  Some students will see reading as stress while to some, reading could be noting but fun.

Ironically, as man is embracing the modern world, with much more sophisticated gadgets to make life easier; the amount of stress we encounter in our daily life continues to increase.  Ordinarily, one should expect that stress should be reducing with modernization.  But the reverse is the case. I wonder why a serious issue like stress is still unrecognized as a killer in this our present generation.  Stress worsens the various sicknesses we suffer in life.

One thing is certain – we cannot avoid stress in our various life endeavors.  Since stress is an inevitable part of our life, we must learn to manage and cope with stress.  Read More on and

Well...not really.  But in small spurts, stress can actually help us focus on the issue at hand and have more energy which is the body's natural fight or flight defense.  On the other hand, the effects of long-term stress can be damaging to both the mind and body.  Did you know that it is responsible for 70% of all doctor visits and 85% illnesses'    Besides yoga, tai chi, and medication this article will address other natural low cost ways to cope with stress.

Some people have become accustomed to a high stress life and do not know any differently.  Not only can stress can weaken the immune system causing colds and the flu, but it can lead to bone loss and debilitating depression.  It can also lead to sleepless nights because the mind is constantly racing.   It can cause people to skip meals during the day making them feel drained looking for comfort foods such as macaroni and cheese.

Being stress free does not have to break the bank.  For starters, read a book you won't want to put down to let your mind escape.  Instead of paying full price for new books at the store go to a thrift shop, get a library card, or exchange books with friends.  Take a brisk walk for at least 20-30 minutes a day to generate oxygen to the muscles and specifically the brain.  This will release feel good endorphins while decreasing tension and boosting the immune system.  Have a positive outlook, strive for a balance between work and outside interests, exercise regularly, and practice deep breathing exercises.  Some other fun ways to cope with stress include playing with your pet, chatting with a friend, and looking at the stars.

The best way to get rid of stress is to prevent yourself from getting into situations that overwhelm your ability to cope.  Identify the cause, create a plan of action, find a support group, live a healthy lifestyle, and avoid drugs and alcohol.  Embrace change and understand the fact there are some things in life that you cannot control.   Easier said than done, right'   If you take one step at a time, living a more stress free life can become a reality.
