[S1070]Stress In Work Place
by Michael Russell, Mic
Sometimes babies that are born too early have to be given drugs to prevent more serious complications of their condition. Babies that are born too small and undeveloped are often sick during their early years. A reason for their early birth can be that their mother had toxaemia, while the baby was in the womb which could mean her kidneys were not removing toxins from her blood. The birth may have had to be induced to save both patients from being poisoned. Such babies can be born possessing about half the normal weight. These babies often have to fight for life and they can have problems with recurring convulsions.

In the past drugs were given to reduce the frequency of the convulsive episodes. Phenobarbital, a barbiturate used as a sedative is sometimes prescribed for young children. However, the effect of drugging a small child can be the impairment of their learning ability meaning that it may take them longer than the average person to learn new tasks. They may have a difficult time in school for the first few years and the stress caused by impaired brain function can make life difficult.

Sometimes these young adults only finish high school because difficulty in learning makes it impossible to continue with a formal education. Without a degree from an institute of higher education, they usually end up taking low paid high stress jobs. There are a lot of these jobs in the customer service and retail sector. Some jobs require the employee to work as a clerk, janitor, store shelf stalker, and fried chicken cook, all in one job. To add to the stress level, there is never enough time to do the work at a normal pace. The job is always rushed and interrupted by customers. This adds to the stress level. Add to that the responsibility for customers who do not want to pay for the gas they take, or the products they walk out of the store with. The stress is compounded if the store is open 24 hours a day. The employee may be required to work a variety of 3 different shifts. If the employee has difficulty sleeping during the day time the problem is compounded by fatigue.

The current trend is to squeeze more and more work out of these low paid employees. The system is designed this way so there is always a high employee turn over. People leave before the company has to spend more, to pay higher wages to long term employees. There is a ready made student or undergraduate work force, who will provide the inexperienced cheap labour the employer requires.

Some people seem to thrive on stress in their lives and on the job. Others handle it, less well. They do not enjoy being squeezed, by the system. Often they burn out and leave, hoping to find a better quality of life doing something more fulfilling.

Having fun with your co-workers is an ideal way to remove stress. It can be done easily so that it doesn't disrupt work or take time away from work. But adding fun activities can lighten the mood in a stressful time can increase productivity and job performance. Which will lead give you more time, to spare for fun activities.

Many people believe playing practical jokes on people in the office is a fun way to relieve tension. It may relieve your tension but add to the person who is the result of the joke. So steer clear of activities like this because it can lead to many disastrous events and upheavals. A few joke telling sessions are okay, but disrupting a co-workers computer can send someone over the edge if they are also stressed and rundown. So have fun, but make it fun for everyone.

Some activities to try include?

Secret Santa

Choosing names out of a hat and secretly giving someone a gift without them knowing it is you can be rewarding for them and you. Gifts can be serious and appreciative, or fun and exciting. The longer you keep the secret, the better. It doesn't just have to be kept until Christmas to use these games.

Secret Admirer

This is similar to the Secret Santa, but you can use gifts or notes to a person. Just telling some co-worker they are doing a good job and that you appreciate it can bring a smile to them, and yourself. Having a few quotes that are humorous, a joke or two that you leave in their pigeon hole or desk can just lighten the day. But have fun and be inventive with what you do.

Social Club

This is a must. Even if half of the staff doesn't want to be involved, do it anyway. You will find others will join as the word spreads.

But collect money, only small amounts and put it into an account for fun activities. It could be a night out, a dinner or various activities.

We go to a place for Laser-Strike. Again a shooting thing, but with lasers. Teams search each other out in a darkened warehouse and shoot with lasers. Fun and exciting, but a physical running around activity. Mix the teams up, boys versus girls, management versus staff or whatever.

But make it a regular event, but fun oriented rather than just down to the bar for a drink. Introduce the trophy as above, so it can be a sports outing or whatever.

You don't even have to spend money. A house to house (progressive) dinner, where everyone provides a different dish to eat, can be fun. It is a party on wheels going form house to house. Hire a bus to transport you to remove the drink driving issue.

But think up ideas, put them into a hat and draw one out each week, month or whenever. But aim to have fun, get to know your work mates and colleagues.

The boss will appear more approachable, workers will appear happier. But the workplace will thrive. More enjoyment, more understanding of everyone's stresses, a collective approach to a lot of work issues. But staff will tend to talk more; issues won't be swept under the table, but kept in the open and dealt with early.

A fun activity and beneficial for the workplace as a whole. Best of all, something to look forward to at the end of a busy day, week and month.
