Theintroduction of computers to schools at all levels has brought theart of stop motion animation and within reach of all students. The prevalence ofinexpensive stopmotion animation softwareallows the student and teacher to become active participants in ICTthat is both creative and more alive than ever before.
In general while students havegood basic ICT skills and an interest in technology. ICT is not asintegrated a component of a school curriculum as it should be. ICT isoften judged as having a narrow focus, emphasising the tool ratherthan the curriculum or learning outcomes.
With 3D stop motion animationclaymation and the right stop motion software activities can combinea number of ICT methodologies. For example ?audio documentarycreation?, ?storyboarding? and ?audio soundtrack creation?are all used with animation to create a coherent end result. Evidencefrom a wide range of schools participating in claymation animationprojects observe students successfully bringing a numberous aspectsof ICT together to complete projects.
The projects require students tocooperate in small teams.
From a teachers perspective theyacknowledge their own skills and confidence improves in ICT ingeneral. Teachers also recognise a significant increased studentengagement throughout the animation project.
Whatwere the outcomes and what have students learned from such animationprojects? Among a number of key outcomes were an increased level ofICT skills and appreciation of integrating a number of tools tocomplete a task. Also students gained a deeperunderstanding of the ways in which ICT and creative thinking can beintegrated in to the broader curriculum. No longer were computersseen as a dormant tool but more a means to creating, collaboratingand expanding horizons.
