For quite a few of us things have changed a lot in the last several years. The value of our homes have fallen dramatically and for many of us planning to move up into a larger home this has caused more than a few problems. If you live in California as we do, there are very few buyers and lots of sellers. You can find great buys, but what can you do with your current home since you probably can't get it sold. If your family is like mine you probably require some more storage space store all your belongings. Without adding on and doing a major remodel, which can't make much sense given the state of the housing market and the economy, we decided to install organizers in our closets. This would give us more storage space in both closets by almost 50%. We had already installed them in two of our bedrooms, now we would add them in the other two bedrooms. We devised a plan that would help with our lack of storage space. How we did it was to put in closet organizers in our other two bedrooms. This has the effect of increasing our storage as if we had built an extra closet, as most closet organizers help to increase closet space by up to 50%. As luck would have it this didn't altogether solve our dilemma. As with many 2 car garages we could only fit one car in it. This is an area where I needed to concentrate on and expand our storage space to help get rid of the clutter. By correcting our garage storage allows us a way to get things out of the house and into an organized space in our garage. We planned an overhaul of our garage space by utilizing lots of storage cabinets and a workbench with additional storage underneath it along with several racks to hang bicycles from. We had or mower, gardening tools and supplies in the garage so we moved them to an outside storage shed we had just purchased|bought|built. This gave us much more space to utilize. By utilizing storage racks and cabinets that were pre-fabricated allowed us to plan and utilize the garage wall space much more efficiently. Almost 70% of the walls were used to place cabinets, storage racks and a workbench with storage. On the remainder of the 30% we put up a movable hook and panel system so we could hang larger things so it would free up important floor space. The most taxing part of getting your garage organized is doing a layout of the garage. You need to take the time to sufficiently plan where everything is to be placed so that order exactly what you need. Proper planning and layout is crucial to the end result. By executing the planning properly it will make the rest of the job a snap. If you invest some effort, a little time and a little cash,a little money, you probably can take care of your storage difficulties. You can organize the inside of your house and after that organize your garage. Or you can do it in reverse order. Either way it will afford you a lot more storage space than you could have ever imagined. Storage problems may be difficult for many families. Solving our storage issues will give us time to wait out the current financial situation and take advantage at the right time to buy a larger home. Storage and space problems can be taken care of with an easy do it yourself project. It won't cost you a small fortune to get it finished. Take some time and see if a garage organizer can solve your problems.
Messy rooms, disorganized closets and jumbled junk (I like to think of them as resource drawers) add un-needed hassle to our already hectic days and lives. I sat by two colleagues at a meeting today and the one was telling us about the flood she recently had in her office when she was on vacation. The man was telling us they remolded a room in their house and how disorganized everything was during that time.
Both of them were expressing their feelings of frustration at the disorganized state their lives were in because of these two instances. Organizing our possessions, treasures, and 'stuff' does give us peace of mind and a feeling that we can accomplish other things in our lives.
Do you ever feel you just don't have enough space to put things? If you had a bigger place you would be organized? Even small spaces and homes can be organized. Here are some ideas of places to use for storage.
Under the bed. If the bed is low, buy (for around $10.00) raisers that raise the bed up about 8 inches. Or you can use cinder blocks and raise it about 12 inches. Then under the bed plastic storage boxes made for this purpose are perfect. Some come on wheels.
In the closet. Plastic boxes can hold out of season clothes and be placed on the top shelf. If the closet is deep they can be stored on the floor. A doublet, which is a two tiered rod, can maximize space in a closet. Many organizing stores carry these, including The Container Store. Use tie racks that can also be used to hang jewelry or scarves. Shoe racks come in a variety of models. Over the door, on the floor, and hanging racks.
Under the sink. There are racks that fit around pipes or removable shelves that can hold twice the amount of things to go under the sink. On the other side of the sink the kitchen trash bin can be placed. When it isn't in plain sight it reduces both visual and floor space clutter.
Donating useful but no longer needed items, getting rid of unwanted junk and by keeping what we do need organized and accessible we let our personal spaces become welcoming havens instead of uninviting areas that make us want to stay away.
