1. Organizing Boxes ? When packing, label each box. Then create a list of contents for each box on your word processor. When you get to your new home, you can use the ?find? function to find the box in question.
2. Moving Pace ? Some people like to do a move all at once, but it can lead to stress and frustration. If possible, try to move in little steps by sticking things in the garage of your new home. Just ask for permission first!
3. Driving Moving Trucks ? If you rent a truck, remember it is not your car. It is much bigger, slower and definitely not as maneuverable. Drive like a granny, not Jeff Gordon.
4. The Double Moving Box ? We are all packrats, but need to do something about it. If you move and find a box you never unpacked, it should go in the trash. Less is more and much easier to carry!
5. Dealing with lots of Books ? Unless you have a prized collection, moving books is a pain in the butt. One option is to sell them. You can go on Amazon and sell them online with little or no problem. Find the book, click the ?sell yours? button.
6. Banging Doors ? If you have large stuff in a room, take off the door before trying to move it. You will avoid damaging the door, crushing your fingers and creating new cusswords!
7. Renovating Your New Place ? Making renovations to your new place is much like the chicken and the egg. Should you move in first or last? Definitely do the renovations first if at all possible.
8. Forwarding Mail When You Move ? It is easy to pop down to the post office to forward your mail, but be careful. It can add a couple weeks to the process or receiving it. With bills, this can be a nightmare. Contact creditors directly with the new address.
9. Check Water Pressure ? Whether buying or renting, check your new residence closely. One important thing is to check the water pressure. A lack of pressure can mean you will be in the shower for ever, particularly if you have long hair.
10. Using Back Braces ? Back braces may look goofy, but they are a definite must if you are moving yourself. Unless you do sit ups every night [don't lie], your back will take a beating without some help.
As a general rule, time spent moving should be off limits. Spouses and friends should agree that anything nasty said during the move will not be held against anyone! Yep, it is that fun and marriages have practically ended while doing it.
