The term "wardrobe" most probably came from such practice.

Evolution to the modern armoire that we know today took a long process. In the 17th century, a movable oak hanging cupboard called the Oakley was a popular item and served the same purpose as the wardrobe. It was massive and cumbrous but with the change in the use of oak for making cabinets it brought about a change in furniture fashion. Walnut replaced oak as the favorite material for making furniture. Unlike with the previous material, clothes were rarely hung on walnut furniture, and instead, drawers and trays became more popular.

During the 18th century, a form of wardrobe was introduced called the tallboy. A common feature of the tallboy was that it should be able to hold within its capacity, eight small men. It was only in the 19th century that armoires started to evolve into its modern form. There were hanging cupboards on each side and drawers below. It was often made with mahogany but a variation made of satinwood was also present. Eventually, the central doors not only covered the upper portion but also reached the ground, covering the drawers and shelves, and finally fitted with mirrors.
