About the Story
Jersey Boys tells the story of the Four Seasons, one of the most successful rock and roll bands of the 1960's. The show is told in a documentary style, and each of the band members is studied in order to give the audience a chance to get to know them intimately.
The show's front man, Frankie Valli, is considered the “main character,” but every individual's turbulent life issues are covered, including the trials and tribulations as the group rose to fame.
Each of the band members grew up poor, and the Four Seasons themselves started out at the very bottom of the musical food chain. Given their lack of funds and unshakable confidence, the band not only wrote all their own music, but recorded it, produced it and marketed it in the beginning until they had reached a level where help was affordable.
Their start led to big things, however, and the Four Seasons were one of the most successful bands of all time. In all, they sold over 175 million copies of their albums, and the Broadway show tells how all of this came to be.
Not only is the show told in a live documentary format, but many of the Four Seasons' greatest hits are seamlessly interwoven into the plot, and anyone who's ever listened to music will recognize many of these transcendent hits. This aspect of the show has motivated many otherwise non-thespians to purchase Jersey Boys tickets simply for the musical value present in every show.
Accomplishments
The show opened with a bang, and many estimate that the first day of its run at the August Wilson Theatre grossed almost $500,000.00. Jersey Boys also enjoyed recognition for more than just its revenue generation, however, as the show won four 2006 Tony Awards, including the “big” one - Best Musical.
