ABOUT THE TOEFL TEST
The aim of the TOEFL test is to check the English use
of people whose native language is not English. In 2003'04, more
than 700,000 people took the test.
TOEFL scores are used by more than 5,000 colleges, universities,
and licensing agencies in nearly 100 countries.
The new, Internet version of the TOEFL test was phased
in beginning September 2005.
The test has four sections:
_Reading?measures the ability to comsume academic reading
matter.
_Listening?measures the ability to hear English as it is used
in colleges and universities.
_Speaking?measures the capacity to speak English.
_Writing?measures the skill of writing in a way that is appropriate
for college and university course work.
The test that you take might have one or more questions that
do not count toward your score. These are either questions that
enable ETS to help create test scores comparable across administrations or
new questions that help ETS determine how such questions function
under actual testing conditions.
The new test focuses on integrated skills, measures all four language
skills including speaking, provides better information about
your skill to communicate in an academic setting, and will be
delivered via the Internet.
Each section of the test has a limit in time. The computer will show
when to start and stop each section. If you finish a section quickly, you
may go on to the next section but you may NOT go back to a section
you have already finished. However, you may go back within the
Reading section during the time given for it. If you don't follow these
rules, the test administrators will considered this to be cheating, and your scores will be canceled.
