[T486]The Goods Live Hard Sell
by Terry Sandhu, Ter
It takes time to lose weight, just as it took time to gain weight. Nobody has ever gone to bed thin and woke up overweight the next morning. It takes a long time to put on a lot of weight,so it stands to reason that it will take some time to lose weight. However people want instant results.Unless they change this way of thinking they will not find any long lasting success.

Many industries that have sprung up around the issue of weight loss, produce and try to sell products that are claimed to be the holy grail of weight loss. The odds on any product delivering what it promises iare going to be pretty remote. Successful weight loss is based on a combination of actions which will include:

Eating smaller meals more frequently, replacing unhealthy foods with healthy foods, being more active in your life, having a varied exercise plan, changing the way that you think of yourself.

Unfortunately people hang on to the small hope that the next miracle product will help them to lose weight. They buy it then when they realise that it is not working for them, then what do they do? They wait for the next product to appear, and they continue to follow the same process again and again.

Deep down most people will know what they have to do to lose weight, but on the whole they tend to ignore this knowledge, and while they keep doing this, they will keep failing. If there was one particular product that could guarantee the results it promised, then everyone would use it and weight issues would not be a problem. However there is no such thing as a miracle weight loss product that is going to work for the majority of people.

Let us look at 2 types of products which are basically money making machines for the people that produce and sell them.

Fitness DVDs

The industry of fitness DVDs is huge. people star in them and try to persuade you that you too can look the way that they do. You are told that if you do what they do on their DVDs,then you too will get a body like them. Admittedly many of the exercises on these types of products can be beneficial, but that is not the whole story.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that these people look the way that they do because of the product that they are trying to sell you, because they don't.

Keep in mind that they probably keep their bodies in shape with expensive personal trainers.

Remember that they can afford to buy the healthiest foods.

Remember that they can afford to have their homes equipped with professional gym equipment.

Remember that the main reason that they initially became celebrities was because they already were beautiful and had great bodies. Not all of us are fortunate enough to have great genetics.

Remember that if all else fails, they have the money to pay for all their fat to be sucked out of them through medical procedures.

Buying some celebrity's DVD is not going to guarantee to give you the body that they have unless you fall into the majority of the above.

Another thing to keep in mind is why do celebrities make and endorse these types of products?

Do they really want to help people who are desperate to lose weight? Did this urge suddenly enter their heads as they sat in the expensive house that everybody else has paid for? Do they really want to make life better for you? Do they know you? Do they care about you?

These products are created so that that certain people can become richer by taking advantage of your desperation to lose weight. Perhaps I am being too cynical; perhaps they do genuinely care about your welfare. I know! after purchasing one of their products try contacting them personally. Ask for some advice on exercise or weight loss. I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you; Well, it is their heartfelt wish to help you. They tell you as much on their DVD.

Exercise products

More people waste money on exercise gadgets than anything else. People see the adverts, the persuasive hard sell, and the selfless endorsements. Before you know what's happened, you have swiped out your credit card and placed your order. You wait religiously for 28 days for your product to arrive. You have visions about how great you are going to look after using this product.

The reality is very different to your visions. The reality is that you will use the product a few times, realise that it's harder than you thought, and you will hide it away in some dark corner so you don't have to be reminded of how much money you have wasted.

Have you ever noticed how well muscled and toned the people in the adverts are? Did these people really get 18in arms by pulling a few cables 5 minutes a day? Did these people really get toned and tanned bodies just from the product that they are using?

Of course there are other people on these advertisements who used to be overweight and are now slim. It comes across as that only their product was responsible for the loss of weight. Did they achieve what they did without changing their diets and lifestyles? Why would these people say that they owed their success to a particular product?

If you had lost a lot of weight and someone told you that they would give you a couple of thousand bucks if you said your weight loss was a result of their product, would you refuse? I know that I wouldn't.

The truth is that people will buy anything if it is packaged and marketed well. Focus on the fact that it is you that is going to make sure that you lose weight and not some gadget that you can slide under your bed. No one product will get you the results that you desire. The most important parts of any weight loss plan are going to be motivation, commitment, determination, and perseverance. Focus on these 4 factors and you will lose weight. Without these 4 factors you will not.

I recently ran into a friend of mine named Sandy, and in the middle of our conversation, another friend of ours was mentioned. Her name is Kim. Kim is very friendly, outgoing, and animated. She never meets a stranger. She is involved in two network marketing businesses, and she is really gung-ho about them.

In fact, her businesses were the topic of mine and Sandy's conversation. We were laughing about how Kim always wants to talk to us about joining her businesses or buying her products when we run into her.

She is always inviting me to opportunity meetings which I have no desire to attend. I am also involved in network marketing, but her approach is completely different from mine. I no longer attend meetings and drag friends along with me. I consider it to be the “old” style of network marketing.

Now, don't get me wrong. There are people like my friend Kim who are very successful with the old methods, but they just don't interest me. I cannot imagine expecting a friend to give up an hour or so of their time to listen to a sales pitch. Come on, we all know that is what these meetings are.

We may try to disguise them by calling them something else, such as opportunity meetings, but that does not change the reality. I believe that some of these old methods are partly to blame for the bad reputation that our business had for many years.

Nobody wants to give up their leisure time to attend a meeting, they don't want to make a list of 100 or more friends and family members to approach, and they don't want to approach strangers on the street with their business opportunity.

Even though I like my friend Kim very much, I actually dread running into her these days. She seems to be following those old training methods to the letter, and with great enthusiasm, but she may lose a few friends along the way.

I recently read a post in an MLM forum by a guy who basically said, “Why worry about advertising and marketing methods? Just talk to as many people as possible every day about your business.”

I wondered if he actually goes out in public each day approaching everyone within sight. If this is the business method that he uses, I guarantee you that people are running the other way when they see him coming.

We cannot assume that everyone is a prospect. We may know that our business and products are top-notch and that everyone should want to join us, but the fact is, not everyone is interested.

Rather than approaching people who will want to punch us for bothering them with what we have to offer, we should concentrate on those who are looking for it. Show those people the value in what your business offers and how it will benefit them. After all, it is about the prospect and those you can help; it should not be about you.

Once someone realizes that you are interested in helping them to create a better life, they will be open to what you have to say. They need to know that it is not just about the bottom line, but that you genuinely want to help others achieve what you have.

Once you have gained their confidence and they know you want to help them improve their situation, they will want to know all about your business. The hard sell just does not work. Build relationships first. Spend your time on those who want to know more.
