[T470]The Game Baggage Claim
by Bill Morgan, Bil
Checking baggage and claiming luggage in the carousel can be some of the most frustrating aspects of travel, and most passengers wait between 1-2 hours to complete the entire process. This is one reason why airlines advise passengers to arrive at the airport at least 2-3 hours before a domestic flight ? more for international flights ? so that the baggage check-in and claims process does not get in the way of catching a flight. Now, many airlines such as US Airways are taking steps to reduce the baggage claim wait time and check-in process, allowing passengers to complete all the necessary steps in under an hour. US Airways has reportedly spent more than $20 million to hire new service workers, managers and make improvements of existing baggage equipment.
US Airways customers have been complaining about lost or damaged bags for years, and the airline is now making internal improvements to ensure bags reach the carousel quickly and efficiently after a flight lands. The airline is improving internal operations by fixing broken baggage carousels, training more workers to manage baggage loading and unloading, and ensuring smoother operations overall. Other airlines may soon follow suit, making the entire flight and travel experience much more manageable and reducing the stress of chronic delays.
The ?old? rules for claiming and labeling baggage still apply, and this is where some careful planning and packing can help speed up the process of finding baggage, and even reduce the risk of mishandled baggage. Mishandled baggage is an inconvenience that can happen at any time, but travelers are advised to pack and lock their suitcases as needed, and ensure that every bag has been labeled accurately. Inserting an extra label on the inside of the bag is also recommended, as the outer tag can become detached from the bag during the loading and unloading of luggage.
