[T462]The Fort Worth Stockyards
by Bill Morgan, Bil
Forth Worth is part of the Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington metropolitan area. Whereas Dallas is more cosmopolitan and Arlington more suburban, Fort Worth is often referred to as Cow Town because it has more of a true Texas, cowboy flavor. For some people, Fort Worth is the prime example of what a Texas city should be.

As a destination in and of itself, Fort Worth pales in comparison to its larger sister, Dallas. But many visitors find it unique and more hospitable than Dallas. Fort Worth boasts a fair amount of nighttime fun as well as museums, shopping, and arts and cultural events.

Sundance Square is a large outdoor shopping area featuring bars, retail, and outdoor events. Some people just come to see the brick streets and old buildings, while others are drawn by the free outdoor concerts and family-centered events.

For a more Texas-style good time, head to the Fort Worth Stockyards. This stretch of bars and venues near downtown is home to cowboy-style nightlife and even a rodeo. The cowboy hats are too numerous to count, especially on the weekend. Even if you leave your ten-gallon at home, though, you should be in for a good time.

In late April, the Fort Worth Arts Festival takes place. It is one of the larger art festivals in the country and receives major corporate sponsorship. This is anything but a stuffy art show, though. There are fine art displays, but also concerts and a myriad of street performers. Best of all, it's free to attend.

If Fort Worth is an example of Texas getting back to its roots, then the Fort Worth Cats are an example of baseball at its purest. Unlike the posh stadium where the Texas Rangers play, the Cats? LaGrave Field is one of those classic ballparks where it is a joy just to sit in the bleachers and take in the whole experience.
