Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Simon Minister. I am 23 years old and I have just finished my last year of University and will soon receive my Software Design degree. Allow me to introduce you to a new idea called "E-Currency Exchange". You may or may not have already heard this phrase before. Whether you have or not it has become a hot keyword for a new way to make money online.

To start you will need to know what e-currencies are. An e-currency (short for electronic currency, also known as online currency) is any currency service that allows you to send money over the Internet. A good example would be PayPal. PayPal is owned by eBay and is used largely to provide an easy payment interface for the many merchants that buy and sell on eBay. It is also used by a large number of sites that sell their own products.

Why do companies use PayPal? They use PayPal because getting paid is easy and secure. You can fund your PayPal account easily using your bank details, and you can easily accept credit cards by accepting PayPal payments. What I was shocked to find out over two years ago was that there are hundreds of other e-currencies that are just like PayPal, and they are actually used by merchants! A few examples are e-Gold, e-Bullion, and IntGold. There are hundreds of others as well, and many are used by thousands of users.

So What?

Well what this means for the Internet community is the same thing that foreign currencies mean to the real world. If I go to Europe I will need to exchange my British pounds for Euros as most stores will likely not accept my British pounds even though they hold value. The banks are the ones that profit from this as they charge a fee to exchange from one currency to another. The interesting thing about online currency is that most of them are country independent.

Take e-Gold for example. If you receive $100 USD (US dollars) of e-Gold you can turn around and send that amount in British pounds without paying an exchange fee. This not only saves merchants thousands of dollars in exchanges but allows these e-currencies to be one of the most flexible payment options around!

However we are still left with the problem of having the ability to exchange between e-currencies. For example if I am at a site that accepts e-Gold but I have a balance in e-Bullion I cannot use it to make purchases at that site. I need to first find an exchanger that will accept e-Bullion and then give me e-Gold in exchange. There is, of course, a fee involved with this that is very similar to the fee involved when banks exchange between currencies.

And you won't have any problem finding exchangers. Just go to Google and type in "e-Bullion e-Gold trade" and you will find plenty out there with various fees and response times.

However you will quickly find that most exchangers only deal with a limited number of e-currencies. Some will only work with one or two and others have up to four or five. If you are an active merchant who is trying to expand his or her marketing influence you may be dealing with over a dozen e-currencies.

For example, if you had $3000 in e-Gold and you signed up as a DXMerchant you would be able to process $3000 worth of exchanges.
