[T494]The Greatest Football Players
by Chloe Ramsbottom, Chl
1. Pele - Many people will give the best player to Pele, and in my view this is a good choice. Born into deprivation and learning to play on the rough streets of Brazil he worked hard to be the best in the world and his on pitch shows were all but dull and tedious. At the age of just 16 he made his first appearance in the Brazilian league and was then offered a place in the Brazil World Cup team of 1958 where they ultimately went on to pick up the trophy.

2. Maradona - Who was born in Argentina and became famous for his inspiration at Boca and Napoli. He was known for that famous "Hand of God" goal that knocked out England in the 1986 World Cup Quarter Final.

3. Cruyff - Was one of the most brilliant players of his era and all time, he was an outstanding dribbler of the ball and three time world footballer of the year. Not only that but he established a style of football recognised as Total Football where players moved around the pitch interchanging their positions on a common occurrence.

4. Beckenbauer - Had a tactical head and was notorious for his performance that improved the game and his teams. It is odd for a defender to make the top five but Beckenbauer's aptitude and wisdom of the game puts him higher than several in the world.

5. George Best - A phenomenon to the footballing world and a player that produced, danced and scored to a world class standard. His vision, fast feet and rapid pace could take him past a range of the world's best defenders and leave them in his wake.
