How does LCD TV work?

LCD TVs are made using two transparent panels that polarized and glued together. One of the two panels is coated with a special polymer that contains the Liquid Crystals from which LCD TV gets its name. A current of light is then passed through these crystals which creates the images we see on our LCD TV screen.

OK, enough with the technical stuff B let=s get to the real benefits of owning an LCD-TV and why they represent a better purchase decision than Plasma televisions.

Advantages of LCD include:

The single-most important action you can take is properlycalibrate your new TV.  Typically, allTVs come from the factory with their settings out of whack.  So let's get started.

First, pick out the spot that you will be watching the TVfrom most.  Also set the lighting tomimic the conditions under which you'll be watching most frequently.  Finally, check the placement of your TV andmake sure it minimizes the amount of glare that it will receive.

Before we get to adjusting settings, we'll need the propertools.  If you have a THX-certified DVD,you've got them.  Pop in a movie and loadthe calibration program.

Let's take a look at the key settings: Brightness, Contrast,Sharpness, Color, and Tint:

  • Brightness: Lower this until the drop-shadow of the THX-logo disappears
  • Contrast: Raise this until the darker white disappears into the lighter
  • Sharpness: Max this out and back it down until the artifacts and halos disappear
  • Color: Like Sharpness, max this out and ratchet it down until the colors look appropriate
  • Tint: Follow the directions in the calibration program

Congratulations, you're done calibrating (provided you?resatisfied with the results) so kick back, relax, and watch your favorite showsin all their LCD glory!  Now that you?rean expert, you should pick up anddo it again for another room.
