by Dr Julie Trudeau, Dr

Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages. Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses.

Music therapy interventions can be designed to:

• promote wellness
• manage stress
• alleviate pain
• express feelings
• enhance memory
• improve communication
• promote physical rehabilitation.

Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in a wide variety of healthcare and educational settings.

Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

In other words, music therapy is the use of music by a trained professional to achieve therapeutic goals. Goal areas may include, but are not limited to, motor skills, social/interpersonal development, cognitive development, self-awareness, and spiritual enhancement.

The idea of music as a healing modality dates back to the beginnings of history, and some of the earliest notable mentions in Western history are found in the writings of ancient Greek philosophers.

Music, beautiful music that haunts our memories, is also music with the magic power to heal, cure and elicit different emotions from the depth of our being, depending on what we are listening to. Goldman and Gurin working on psycho-immunology reveal each and every organ of our immune system is made up of nerve fibres providing biological communication between nerve endings and the immune system. In short, there is a direct link between a person's thoughts, attitudes, perceptions, emotions and the health of the immune system. This means music bestows on us, the power to be proactive in maintaining the health of our body, mind and spirit. It empowers us to tap into the innate knowledge that resides deep within our cells, simply by listening, playing or creating music.

Music nourishes and enriches our lives in so many ways, inspiring us, relaxing us, energising us; in short it has immense healing power, a power that can keep us in the prime of health. Everywhere, our universe is a symphony of sounds interacting and vibrating together, music is the energy pulse that courses in and through everything via sound vibrations.

Music therapy can effectively cure wounded minds. It is considered as one of the most effective for patients that are suffering from stress, drug or alcohol addiction, eating disorders and many other problems.

Not only that, but research has proven time and time again that music will help your speech skills, reduce your pain, and allow you to get on with your life.

If you are considered unresponsive, music can help you communicate even without speaking. By using music as a therapy, you will be able to carry on with your daily activities.

Furthermore, it is also said that music therapy can also result in balanced heart, breathing and blood pressure rate.

Music is able to help to patient get rid of unpleasant thoughts. It is able to allow the patient to freely discuss problems which may have been hiding for years.

Music therapy encourages patient to socialize, feel confident and communicate with confidence, encouragement of thinking confidently and increases their power of decision making.

You may be asked to play a musical instrument yourself, to help relieve symptoms. More than likely, you will be listening to music to help get things started in your therapy sessions.

You may also be asked to write some music down, or perhaps even write a song. This can allow you to release some of that built up tension you may be experiencing.

Writing music not only relieves stress but also improves ones aptitude and the ability to play or compose music. Writing and playing music using instruments helps in slowly and gradually letting go off all those negative emotions which results in stress relief or pain and patient feeling much better.

Also, music therapy improves self-esteem and stress management capacity of a person at the same time suppressing the feelings of stress, anxiety and ability to control those feelings.

The therapist sits with the patient and familiarizes with them first such as getting to know which instrument the patient likes or what type of music he/she likes to listen or play before going on with the therapy sessions. Knowing patients' likes and dislikes can accelerate the healing process.

Music therapy is a popular choice amongst many for treating different problems. It is known to have positive effect in treating patients.
