[M492]Mid Life Crisis Symptoms
by Sean Carter, Sea
Midlife crisis is a much heard about term but very few people realize it on time. The realization comes when the crisis is at the paramount an there is very little that they can do. This is a thing that makes an individual feel different. Whenever a person is going through a crisis in life, he/she starts feeling uncomfortable. Either they are not satisfied with the job that they are doing or they may end up feeling that their marriage is not working smooth. Boredom and frustration becomes their alley and it completely captures their mind and body, leaving them mentally fatigued.
It is a kind of psychological problem where the person feels completely out of place and finds it very difficult to adjust with situations, which he had been doing all this while. In some men and women, midlife crises also happens due to hormonal changes. But there are case where an individual suffers due to both physical and hormonal change.
Mid-life crisis makes an entry usually at about the age of 35-50 and it hits both the sexes. But in men it lasts about 3-10 years and with the women, it is just a matter of 2-5 years. Even though this is what the survey says, there are cases where it may change much beyond the mentioned time. It is a type of crises that hits both men and women but yet there is a difference.

Whenever there is a talk on midlife crises, people tend to react very negatively. According to the famous writer Jim Conway, ?escaping the mid-life development crisis is probably as likely as a child escaping adolescence ?. Fear is what people encounter when they think or talk about mid-life crisis. The writer says that there is nothing to panic or worry nor is there a need to have a feeling of mental, physical or financial breakdown. As we believe that, things happen for the good, midlife crises is also the same. It too happens for the good, as it helps the person rediscover himself/herself.

Symptoms of midlife crisis

A person tends to get irritated, whenever he/she is undergoing a mid-life crisis. Their behavior is never the same as it had been before.
There is an irritation and disturbance in their sex life too. They do not enjoy the way they had been doing it all the while.
Being mentally and physically fatigue is a very common symptom. Restless is the next best word for people undergoing mid-life crisis.
Laziness comes in automatically. They tend to loose interest in all that do.
Depression comes in people suffering from midlife crisis, but they can well be differentiated from the others suffering a depression. The ones undergoing midlife crisis is always in a hurry to do things. As they have always had the feeling that, they could never meet their goals, so they try to finish it up in the least possible time.

There are some Symptoms that are found mostly in the men

Last but not the least, they loose the ability to recover quickly from small or big diseases. They loose their resistance power too.

Causes

As far as mid life crisis is concerned, there are two types of it: psychological and physical cause.

Psychological cause

The change of times and progress in age is a leading cause towards mid-life crises. The youth gets a lot of importance in comparison to the old people. This makes them feel that they have been sidelined which leaves them frustrated.
Problems arise when ever there is a change in situations which probably may be an unwanted one. Divorce is a fine example.
As one gets older, their sex life faces a lot of problems. Things are no more the same and pleasant as it had been. This is a reason enough to face mid-life crises.
To some it may come due to professional reasons. By the time one reaches middle age, they seem to have achieved all that they wanted in life. This leaves them confused as to what should they be doing in future. They stare into nothingness even after the big achievement.
Some researches have also shown that, sleep is the main reason for men to slip into mid-life crisis problems. As one ages, sleep seems to be on the decreasing end. This lack of sleep causes a disruption in their life schedule.

Physical causes

There is an argument among psychologists, regarding ?male menopause? and they say that, due to this hormonal change, many slip into mid-life crises.

Tackling mid-life crises

There are many other better ways to handle stress, rather than taking up alcoholism and smoking very religiously. Exercise, yoga and meditation is the best medicine to tackle stress.
Try to change with time. Many face a problem because they feel it difficult to walk with time. If you are young, you have to behave young, but if you are old you have to accept that fact too, with complete enthusiasm and energy.
Never give a second thought to vising a doctor if you feel that you are finding it difficult to tackle the problem. He is the best adviser and councilor.
Speak out your problem to your spouse or somebody very close to you. This will help lighten your burden.
Always think positive. That helps to all extend. People around you may be negative but give it a least ear. You are the best judge for your self as none other than you know your potentials better.
Eat and sleep well. Try not to upset you routine. You will end up upsetting your life.
Get used to the changes in your sex life. Such problems are very normal. It is always advisable to change with situations rather than making demands. With age, compromises need to come in.
Try to balance your professional and personal life very tactfully. Do not give too much of an attention to one thus ending up neglecting the other.

Mid-life crises is all in the minds of the people. It is in their hands to have it or give it. Even if one is undergoing such a problem, it is always advisable to take it positively rather than escaping from it. If faced courageously, it will give you the confidence to live life better.

After 40 one tends to be more aware of their time left and the things which are undone in their life. While it usually takes a crisis to become more aware, this doesn’t always move one to make change in their life, especially in areas which are no longer bringing joy and meaning. The mid-life crisis can come in big or small packages. Illness, divorce, layoff, death of a loved one are big packages. Daily boredom, un-ease, sadness, unhappiness or even depression are simply signs that something is no longer working in one’s life. After age 40 and frankly at any age, it is critical to pay attention to these inner signals. Here are the ten critical steps you must take now to redesign your life for more joy, happiness and meaning.

1. Stop working

That’s right, you read this correct. Stop working and start living. Living with daily joy, happiness and purpose is worth striving for. It is enjoyable and refills the water glass of life with more energy, more passion and more excitement!
Start by finding new work which feels like a better alignment of what you truly are interested in and either have or can learn the required abilities. Many people continue to simply work at things which they are good at but no longer have interest in.

2. Find some greater purpose

Identify and find something you feel strongly about or which bothers you about the world and do something about it. For example in America, it bothers me that we are spending billions of dollars in needless wars while our own cities fall apart. We are now a nation of have and have-not’s when it comes to medical care. Our educational system is deeply flawed with too much focus on scores and grades and little focus on learning; not to mention too costly as well.
Pick something which really bothers you and build a life purpose around it. Your life will never be the same for the better

3. Stand up for your beliefs

Don’t be afraid to finally live your life through your causes. Drive yourself finally through internal reward vs. external recognition. Replace old beliefs which are no longer useful with new ones which better serve you

4. Be resilient

Stay focused- strive for more happiness in your life. Make this a goal in itself. Be selfish and define for yourself what being happy really means to you. Despite the barriers and hurdles we must all cross on the journey to more meaning and fulfillment in our lives, keep this vision clear at all times

5. Stay organized and structured

Have a plan for your life. This includes your daily living and your long term goals. Without a plan for one’s life with clear intent, when the crisis hits and it will, your personal roadmap and plan will get you through

6. Surround yourself with love

There is no need to be lonely in one’s life. Surround yourself with people you love. If necessary, find new people to love and receive love from. Build up your relationships in your life which nurture and support your personal roadmap.

7. Learn to accept your mistakes

This is easier said then done! We are good at beating ourselves up when things go wrong and seldom take the time to reflect when things go well. How can you be more of our own best friend? Learn to accept you as you are. Ask yourself; what can I learn from this past experience? What new wisdom can I gain from my actions? Realize that everything you do or did was for a good reason at the time. Learn to love yourself more and others will too.

8. Don’t let the mundane slow you down

Don’t let the mundane aspects of life slow you down. Yes, laundry has to be washed, cars need gas, lunches need to be made, and bills need to be paid. Ensure however that each and every day you identify the most important actions you must take to move you towards what you want vs. what you do not want in your life.

9. Take care of your body and mind

Eat well, sleep well and exercise daily. Take time each day to reflect on your feelings and thoughts. Heard this before? Well, it works. When our bodies and minds are stressed, we lose sight of our goals and what is most important to us in our lives. Writing is a good way to reflect on how you doing. Start a daily journal- just before bed; answer the question; what did I learn today about myself and others?

10. Seek joy not pain

Re-align your life and your work around the sole purpose of acquiring more joy, meaning and happiness in your life. This is in abundance in the world. You just must redesign your life with the intent to create more of it for yourself.

Mid-life Crisis?

Refocus your attention now on what would be perfect for you in your life. Create a new vision and take small steps each and every day with the intent towards creating more joy in your life. It will make your crisis suddenly feel like a crusade. This is good.
