[M677]Most Common Eating Disorder
by Phoenix Delray, Pho

Bulimia Nervosa is another common eating disorder, characterized by a consistent cycle of binging. (eating large amounts of food in a short time) and purging ( self induced vomiting) Binging is often done to cope with feelings of shame and guilt, which return as soon as the binging is completed. Purging is accomplished by laxative abuse, excessive and strenuous exercising, periods of eating very little or nothing at all, and self induced vomiting techniques.

Contrary to popular stereotypes, anyone, from any socioeconomic or ethnic background has the potential to become bulimic. Men, as well as women can become bulimic, though this disorder does typically impact women more significantly. Binges can be triggered by anger, sadness, stress, and major life events.

Cultural pressures also play a part in the behaviors and actions of a bulimic. Women n the United States are under constant pressure to be extremely thin, even though the ideal is very unrealistic. It has also been theorized that bulimia and other eating disorders run in families, since it has been shown that people with bulimia also have parents and other relatives who are also bulimic. Low self esteem and poor self-image can also trigger bulimia, and genes, hormones, and chemical imbalances in the brain can also trigger bulimia and other eating disorders.

Bulimia can be difficult to diagnose, since those suffering from this disorder may appear thin, overweight, or of average weight, and may show no outward signs. There are, however signs to be aware of. Using diet pills, frequent visits to the bathroom, swollen cheeks and jaws, rough skin at the base of the knuckles, teeth that look very clear, and broken blood vessels around the mouth are all potential signs.

Successful treatment of this disorder depends on early diagnosis and treatment and the support of those close to the patient. Bulimia, like other eating disorders tends to create an attitude of not only self hatred, but self isolation as well. This cycle can be hard to break, but it is not impossible, and when you consider the genetic component that some researchers feel is associated with this condition, it is easy to see why many therapy sessions also include the patients immediate family as well, particularly in the case of younger patients.

Eating disorders are painful both emotionally and physically, but with the proper therapy, support, and treatment, a return to health is possible. Bulimia nervosa is a serious condition, so if you knows someone whom you believe is suffering from it, take the necessary steps to get them the help they need today.

Having an eating disorder is much more than being on a strict diet, carefully counting the calories and exercising daily to lose weight. An eating disorder is an illness that seriously affects the patient's life and the lives of his family members.
Those with eating disorders are trying to control their emotions and their lives through eating or through not eating, depending on each person with an eating disorder.

The two main eating disorders are anorexia and bulimia. Both illnesses make their victims obsessed with the fact that they must do everything in their powers to not become fat. They feel that as long as they are thin they are in control of their actions and lives.

Those with bulimia eat a large amount of food in a short time and then they make themselves throw up or they take a large amount of laxatives so they eliminate all the food they've eaten as fast as possible.
Bulimia patients do a lot of physical exercises and they eat very little, until they can't stand the hunger and they eat as much as they can. When they realize the they have eaten a lot of food they immediately take action to eliminate it.

The causes of bulimia are psychological, and they are related to stress, culture or the family.

The symptoms of bulimia are:
-the patient takes extreme measures to lose a lot of weight, exercises all the time even if he/she is injured or very tired
-throws up or takes pills to urinate often or laxatives

If bulimia is not discovered and treated by a specialized doctor it can gravely endanger the health condition of the patient. It can cause depression, anxiety, cavities, fatigue, weakness, ulcer, low blood pressure and many more.

Those with anorexia are obsessed with losing weight and they have a distorted image of their own bodies too. Even if they are as thin as a stick they will still think that they are fat.
They talk about diets and exercising all the time and they do not eat at all. If you offer them food they will refuse. They can even die of starvation eventually if they continue to refuse to eat for a long time.
As in bulimia's case, anorexics talk all the time about losing weight and they always exercise and keep a strict diet.

Anorexia can also lead to serious health issues like low blood pressure, weakened bones and defense system, kidney stones, depression, loss of period in women and loss of potency in men, and many more.

Those with anorexia or bulimia must be helped as soon as possible before they seriously harm themselves. They will deny that they have a problem , so talking with them won't help. They must be helped by specialized doctors.
