[M740]Moving Checklist Address Change
by Ken Simms, Ken
Final House Move Checklist is given below. Before moving from one place to another, make sure that you have done all these, as mentioned in the following final checklist. Please read these principles and try to follow them. These guidelines will really prove to be helpful, and will help to make your move tension free.

1. If you have a pet with you, make sure that it is safe and sound and present when you are ready to move. It is observed that cats, generally, have a habit of disappearing just at the same time when you need them. So, take care of your pets.

2. You should confirm whether the keys of the new home are ready or not. It would save you plenty of time. And do not forget to take the keys for your new house with you, before moving.

3. Ensure that you have told all your acquaintances and relatives, about your plans to move to a new place. You should inform not only your relatives and friends, but also all of your associates who need to be told about your move, like your milkman, cable operator and newsagents etc.

4. Another important point that you must keep in mind is that you should disconnect the gas, electric and water supplies at the mains. Any negligence in this matter may create a serious and costly accident. Before leaving for your new house make sure that you have taken the readings of all the meters.

5. While moving to a new place, you should leave your forwarding address at a proper place where the new resident of your house may easily find it. This is a very important step because there may be a lot of important people and companies of your interest, who would not know that you have moved to a new location or you might not be able to inform a particular person or family due to lack of contact or any other reasons. So whenever they come to your old house or send you any mail at that address the new occupier may tell him about your new address.

6. Before you move, make sure to double check each room to make sure there is no item of furniture left behind or over looked by the movers.

7. Make sure that you have all the belongings and baggage with you, like shoulder bags, pocket books, travel documents etc. Make sure that the important documents like credit cards, educational certificates, driving license etc. are with you. You should keep all these documents in a special bag so that you do not forget them.

8. Before leaving the place, make sure that all the doors and windows are locked up.
9.Do not forget to hand over the keys of your house as arranged.

We've all done this at one time or another made a moving checklist and the darn thing never seemed to end. It's good idea, but once you start you realize your moving checklist is likely going to run to more than just one page. In fact, everyone in the house seems to feel duty bound to add things to the moving checklist and you'd rather wish they wouldn't.

Where to start with your moving checklist? As simple as it may sound, start at the beginning and just add things to it that come to mind as you think about them. Everyone's moving checklist is going to be different, and that's just life.

Here are a few tips of where to get started that may help you out:

o About a month before your move date, start cleaning out closets, basement and the garage. Donate items to charity, have a garage sale, figure out cost of shipping vs buying later
o Get your packing supplies
o Pack items you don't use daily - books, pictures etc.
o Packing for storage? Tape an itemized list on the outside of the box.
o Keep a file on all related moving expenses. Some items are tax deductible.
o Locate a reputable mover, and get at least two estimates, references and a quote.
o Make sure your house insurance is transferred to your new home.

About two weeks before you move:

o Arrange for disconnect and reconnect of all your utilities.
o Get a new phone number.
o Make arrangements to get your mail forwarded.
o Close and transfer bank accounts. Get new checks.
o Stop newspaper or other home services (recycling etc.)
o Tell doctors, dentists, etc of your move, your address and phone number. Ask for any files you may need at the new location.

About one week before your move:

o Clean your house, or have a cleaning service do it.
o Check in with the movers and confirm date, times, departure and arrival times.
o Do the job we all love to hate, defrost the freezer and clean it out.
o Return any items borrowed (library books, videos). Clean out school lockers, pick up prescriptions etc.

A few days before your move:

o Finish packing and marking boxes clearly
o Put important files, documents, insurance, x-rays etc, in a box and put it in your vehicle.
o Make up a box marked Open First with things you well need right away.
o Leave your keys for the new occupants of your home - label them.
o Try and leave them the manuals for your appliances if you are not taking them with you.

As you can see, the list seems to propagate over night. Never mind, it will all come out in the wash when you successfully get to your new home and thank your lucky stars you had had the sense to make a moving checklist.
