[M437]Meta Tag Search Engine Optimization
by Shawn Hickman, Sha
Your title tag is the most important tag. It tells the spiders the nature of your site. Don't waste time putting your company name in this tag. Use the tag to specify the main keywords in the page you are trying to position well with. For example, instead of Big Guys Inc describe your business in keyword phrases. Try New York Printing Services. Make sure to limit the title tag to 100 characters or less, so you dont get flagged for keyword stuffing.

Your description tag reflects the keywords in your title tag but you have more space to describe your business. Remember, the title and description tags both show up in the free listings so remember to make sense while still utilizing the keywords. If you get great listings but your listing doesn't make any sense then no one will want to click on the ad and visit your site. Limit this tag between 200 and 250 characters.

Finally your keywords tags still hold some importance and reflect what should be in your website content. Add the keyword phrases from your title and description tags into the keyword tag. Add other keywords that are of importance to this tag but you weren't able to add to the other tags because of limited space. Limit the keyword tag to 1024 characters.

Remember meta tags work great when optimized but you also need optimized content on all pages that you want great placement with.

Look through your website, I am sure you will find one or two pages if not more that have minimal keyword optimization. You may find many new customers that you would not have come to you site if that one page was not optimized. Every extra visitor counts so use the keywords related to that page that usually gets very few visitors.

One last tip, make sure all pages that have been optimized are linked to the homepage so that the search engine spiders can find them.

Have fun and target the few big keywords first then you can target the less searched keywords to get the extra visitors that would have gone to your competitions site instead.

Anyone serious about succeeding online must take search engines seriously. Search engines drive a significant amount of traffic to your site. You have to do everything in your power to optimize your site to please the search engines. The bigger value the search engines place on your site, the more traffic they'll generate for you.

The key to proper SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is to achieve optimal results for relevant search phrases. If you have a Chiropractic practice in San Diego, your goal is to get optimal ranking for your related keywords such as “san diego chiropractic.” It wouldn't help you business to also rank well for “new york city chiropractic” because your customers are in San Diego. The key is not only to rank well in the search engines, but also to rank well for the appropriate keyword phrases.

There are a variety of techniques listed below to help you get more visitors to your website. Make sure you include as many as you can into your search engine optimization strategy.

Write a Page Title

Title tags are critical for search engines. The title tag copy is one of the most important SEO factors in how the search engines view a web page. The title tag is displayed in the search engine result pages as the heading describing the web page. It's crucial to maintain balance between optimizing for the search engines and being descriptive for humans. A title page that stands out is more likely to trigger a click from a searcher. Avoid "filler" words from the title, such as "the," "and," etc, and keep your title fairly short. A good rule of thumb is to keep your title under 64 characters.

It is of paramount importance to include your target keyword phrases in your title. Note: Make sure the words from your page title are also found within the content of your web page. Search engines are looking for the connection between the page title and the page content.

Practical Example: An accountant in San Diego, may consider the following page title “San Diego Accounting & Bookkeeping Services”
