[B37]Baby Sleep Too Much

This sleep pattern lessens as the baby grows so by the time he is 3 months old, he is only sleeping twelve to fifteen hours every day. Your child at this age has also dropped most of his night feedings. This may be the time to try to start to establish regular sleep patterns. You should begin by starting a nightly routine, such as giving your baby a warm bath, reading him a story, and then putting him to bed. You should do this routine at the same time every night to accustom your baby to sleeping at night. You should also establish a regular time for his naps also. Within a short period of time, your baby should sleep for a six hour stretch during the night.

You should not be alarmed if your baby begins to wake up at night again over the next few months. He is becoming more aware of his surroundings, and may be waking p because he is rolling over or sitting up in his sleep or the baby may just want you. You should go into his room and settle him back down and leave him in his bed. This will establish that night is still bedtime and within a few weeks he should be back on his regular schedule.

By six months old, your baby should be sleeping a total of eleven to fifteen hours a day and should start to sleep for longer periods of time. You can limit naptime to one in the morning and another nap in the afternoon. You should keep on the regular sleeping pattern that you established three months earlier. Some babies begin to wake up again in the middle of the night at this stage. If your baby wakes up because he is sitting up in his sleep, you will need to teach him to lay himself back down. You can do this by making it a game during the day. You can just sit him up and then lay him down. As you repeat these motions, the baby will learn to do them himself.

By the time the baby is a year old, he should be sleeping all night without waking up at all. But if he is still waking up, you need to be firm with him. At this age, the baby may not understand all of your words, but the tone in your voice can get your point across. You should tuck the baby back in, kiss him goodnight and firmly tell him to go to sleep. Your baby may cry for the first couple of nights but he will eventually sleep through the night again.

Baby sleep patterns vary from child to child. By establishing a regular schedule from three months old, you can probably be assured of raising a good sleeper.

Many parents search for the underlying cause of the problem, hoping to find a solution. This also leaves several parents questioning if feeding may have something to do with the sleep problem.

The objective of this article is to delve deeper into the different aspects of feeding your small baby and look at the effects that feeding could perhaps have on a babys sleeping schedule and habits.

Mixing Breast-feeding and Bottle Feedings

It is believed that a mixture of bottle and breast in feedings could potentially sleeping problems. There are several different reasons for this when you are breast-feeding your young baby. With each having a feed, the breast is signaling to the brain that more milk needs to be produced for the subsequent feeding. When a bottle is incorporated into feedings, this process could be interfered with. The breast will begin to produce less milk due to the less frequent breast feedings.

Additionally, during the times when you do breast-feed your baby, he or she will not get as full with the breast-feeding because of the lessening of milk supply. This effectively means that your baby will require feeding more regularly which will mean his or her sleep patterns will be interrupted by the need for feeding.

Feeding your child to sleep

Feeding your child to sleep may be creating a problem with their sleep patterns. Your baby will soon begin to recognize that you feed him or her at bedtime. This will become something they depend on and expect. normally, this will be the case with each waking throughout the night as well.

There are of course, techniques you can use to prevent your baby from depending on feedings to fall asleep.

First, change the time or the amount of time you feed your baby when nearing his or her bedtime. Doing so will disconnect the association of bedtime with having a feed.

Another option is feed your child earlier in the evening instead of as a bedtime routine. When you do these things your baby will not associate eating with bedtime. This will help your baby learn to fall asleep on his own accord.

What are YOU eating and does it affect your babys sleeping pattern?

The answer quite simply is yes. As a breast-feeding mum, everything that you put into your body affects your breast milk. If you do not eat the appropriate amount of foods and calories each day, your breast milk is affected greatly. It is important that you eat the recommended three meals each day and most likely a few snacks in between. Your milk needs to have enough calories in it in order for your baby to feel nicely full and satisfied. If it does not, he or she will want to feed longer until he or she is full.

You need to eat fresh healthy foods and try to eat them more frequently, as well as drinking plentry of fluids throughout the day. This will benefit your
milk supply, therefore helping your baby and his or her sleep patterns. The fuller he or she feels, the better he or she will sleep.


Will solids help your baby?

For some reason many parents believe this will help, but numerous studies haven't associated any change in those babies who were fed by the bottle or breast and those who are fed solids. This has not been proven to help the baby sleep at all. Doctors usually do not suggest adding solid foods prior to six months old.
