[M582]Modern Designer Engagement Rings
by Julie Shields, Jul
Tiffany & Co. was founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany in 1837 and is considered one of the world's finest jewelry companies. It is famous for its wide array of ultra high quality jewelry and its trademark little blue bag. The Tiffany & Co store on 57th avenue in New York City which appeared in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's is quite popular with tourists. To be honest, I must admit that Tiffany & Co. makes my knees weak. I don't think I'm alone in this. There's something about getting one of those little blue bags that seems to set off a joyful chemical reaction in women's brains. I really can't explain it...it just happens.

Vera Wang got her start in the fashion industry working for fashion elite such as Vogue and Ralph Loren. She eventually went out on her own selling high-end, fashionable wedding dresses. However, she has expanded her business to include other items and more recently moved into designing engagement rings for Bailey Banks and Biddle.

Barry Verragio studied at the reknowned Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He worked for several years in the jewelry industry prior to proposing to his current wife. In order to make her ring, he invented a new technique which suspended the diamond above the ring. The engaged couple received so many compliments on the rings, that Barry decided to start his own company based on the ring he designed for Tanya. Many years later, the couple as well as the Verragio jewelry company are still going strong.

Haig Tacori came to America in 1970 and has developed a reputation for exceptional platinum jewelry designs. Tacori rings have been featured on the popular television series, The Bachelor.

Scott Kay led the resurgance in popularity of platinum engagement rings. He is known as one of America's most popular bridal jewelers. His affordable designs are within the reach of most consumers.

Ritani engagement rings are all about style and comfort. I particularly like the look of the rings from the Endless Love Collection. With a host of classy styles and a range in pricing, Ritani is sure to win over many fans.

The design of modern jewelry can be inspired by present or recent events but also by ancient symbols and traditions. A good example of recent events that have inspired jewelry designers is the first atomic bomb leading to a massive increase of starburst designs and sprays of diamonds. Ancient traditions can be found in the designs of Egyptian jewelry, spiritual jewelry with kabala symbols, tribal designs, amulets for protection and sacred talismans. The day or night time also has its influence on these designs being gold as the preferred metal for daytime jewelry and diamonds for the evening or night

Jewelry For Daytime And Nighttime Use

Florentine finishes, foxtail chains, mesh and similar are preferred for golden jewelry that is being worn during daytime. Alternative to this are string of pearls, natural or cultivated. These pearl based designs were very popular amongst the modern jewelry designers in the fifties

The next decade, or the very colorful sixties saw a radical change in modern designer jewelry where hybrid jewelry items became fashionable and women broadened their horizons by also wearing silver, gemstones as well as geode crystals besides the usual diamond, gold and platinum. This era of flower power was well embodied in diamonds that were brilliantly cut and also some organic and abstract as well as jagged shapes became popular, and a lot of the modern designer jewelry of this period was made from metals.

Because trends change every so often, the seventies saw the blooming of women's movement and feminism became the new driving force that saw yet another change in women's fashion purchases, and it was now time for the jewelry of this era to look and feel much as women wanted them to appear which meant a more personalized style of jewelry becoming the new rage. It saw changes in type of materials used and now wood, ivory as well as rock crystals and coral became incorporated in the modern designer jewelry of this era.

The eighties and beginning of the nineties were marked by a glitzy, glamorous and sparkling style of jewelry design. The wedding of Princess Diana of Wales was marking another turning point when jewelry became more refined and elegant

When we entered the new millennium modern jewelry designers started to use even more materials in their creations to make them even look more special and unique. The use of hybrid metals, metal clay, synthetic materials, PMC , non-precious metals, synthetic gemstones, the coloring of pearls and multicolored diamonds ave given birth to a complete new style and look of modern jewelry.

When Man became aware of the presence of powers greater than himself he started to create spiritual jewelry for protection and blessing. This spiritual jewelry came in the form of rings, bracers, amulets, talismans and necklaces. Today there are many spiritual jewelry designers specialized in this kind of jewelry. Although the process of making the jewelry may have changed these unique jewels are still made based on ancient traditions and they make an excellent gift.
