[M517]Mini & Self Storage
by Kamyar Shah, Kam
Who is more organized in your household? Is it you or is it your spouse? Maybe it's neither of you. Nevertheless, one of you needs to take charge and get that clutter shelter you call a home organized. That's right, put on your captains hat and lead your household to neatness. Don't trust that someone else is going to get it done for you. You need to take charge or it is just going to get worse. But you are having trouble with where to begin, aren't you? Your answer is self storage rentals.

Self storage rentals provide a safe haven for your household clutter. Rent a 5 x 10 self storage unit to put away some furniture, like a couch, chair, chest, or dresser. Plus, it holds a mattress and small storage boxes. If you have more rooms full of furniture, or large storage boxes, consider renting a 10 x 10 unit. Still not big enough? Well self storage rentals are as large as 10 x 30 storage units. Here you can put away furniture storage of a 3 bedroom house plus miscellaneous boxes and storage bins. 10 x 30 self storage rentals are equivalent to a one and a half car garage. So park a classic car or boat in there too.

Self storage rentals are safe and secure. Be worried free while your storage is in self storage rentals. Most self storage facilities are fenced behind an access controlled gate. Property management teamed up with video surveillance is keeping watch over your self storage rental. Not only is your storage unit individually secure with your own lock, the self storage property is closed behind a pin pad controlled gate. Only other self storage renters have access to the self storage property.

Self storage rentals are convenient and conveniently located. There is probably one within a mile from your home. If not there should be several in you town. Depending on the self storage property, some have 24 hour access and others have extended operating hours. The one you choose depends on your access needs.

How do you find self storage rentals? They are everywhere; however there are several resources that can help you find a self storage business. The most popular way is the yellow pages. Just thumb your way to self storage and find the storage properties most convenient to your home. Another popular tactic is using the internet. A self storage business website offers more information than a phonebook. The web will answer many questions you've had regarding self storage rentals. A self storage website educated self storage customers about different storage options. If you are not sure where a certain self storage business is located you can find a map with directions from your home.

Now that you know your options, get the family together and clean up that clutter. There is no reason or excuse for living in a pig sty. Wouldn't it be nice to come home from a stressful day at work into a tranquil environment? That is the way your home should be. So gather the troops and get started today.

There is a growing trend in markets large and small to convert former grocery stores or other vacant retail space into secure, climate controlled storage centers. This new market model is a win-win for everyone. Strip mall owners are able to get long term leases on retail space that was sitting idle. The self storage center is able to get a great price on existing space that is already under roof and has HVAC. Plus, can be converted less expensively to storage units then if they were starting from scratch. The big winner is the self-storage consumer.

Since these new storage centers are in retail areas they tend to be more conveniently located than newer, free-standing self storage centers. Because the overhead is lower the rates for individual storage units are often less expensive per square foot. These centers also offer a wider variety of space options since not all of their storage units are the same cookie-cutter size. This is really handy if you have something that is over sized or an odd shape that needs to be stored. The biggest plus is this new generation of climate controlled storage is an added level of security.

The converted retail stores to self storage centers have limited access, either through the front doors or the shipping bay doors. These are easy to monitor both by humans and by video security cameras. This is much better that hundreds of feet of chain length fence – often with blind spots that are not monitored – and the risk of someone breaking into your storage unit undetected.

Another plus, especially if you do not visit your storage unit very often, it is unlikely you will experience a climate related accident such as freezing of water damage. If the roof is leaking in these storage centers, someone will notice. If the roof is leaking in a single storage bays of a free standing self storage center, no one would notice until you arrived and opened the door.

Another plus of these next generation storage centers is many will offer high security storage. This is usually a section within the storage center that is well secured, with heavier locks on doors, better video monitoring and often manned by a security guard 24/7. These are well suited for the storage of valuable antiques or works of art. While not inexpensive, this level of storage goes for a fraction of what high end, all-climate storage used to cost.

The only down side to these new storage centers, especially those that are just getting started, they do not offer the same access that the more mature free standing self storage centers offer.

Because there are now more options then ever for self storage, including the new portable on demand storage solutions, rates have been stabilizing and in some cases actually coming down. You would be well advised to shop around for the best pricing, especially if you are looking for a long term contract. Self service center owners are less likely to give a price break to someone who will only be there for a few months, but will often cut deals better than the printed price sheet for someone looking at a multiple year lease.

Before you sign any long term contract, be sure to read it carefully and insist on a job change or emergence “escape” clause. If you suddenly get transferred or have something else unforeseen occur, you don't want to end up paying for years on an empty storage unit.
