An Internet forum is a wonderful place to be heard. There are copious forums for anything and everything under the sun. Whether you are a political junkie, a budgie aficionado, or a religiously enlightened person, there is a forum out that that will cater to your view point where you may discuss with likeminded individuals. You will find that the die hard members of a forum – those who make themselves at home and post very frequently – will soon establish their own language. While Internet language is common to many forums, the proper use of these terms is sometimes determined by the users of the forums.
Informational forums usually have the “guru” – she or he is the undisputed authority on a subject and as such often sets the tone for accepting newbies as either fellow experts or learners. She or he will also set the tone of the forum – is it dry, factual, and professional or is it hip, funny, and laced with nuggets of information.
Opinion forums on the other hand will often give way to heated discussions. This is especially true when it comes to politics and religion. Frequently there will be posters with opposing viewpoints or faiths who will sometimes go at each others' throats – unless the forum manager refuses to entertain dissenting viewpoints and simply deletes posts of disagreeing forum members. The pecking order in the forums that do permit dissenting viewpoints is sometimes quite interesting to see; the moderator is usually vilified by one or more sides, while the feuding viewpoints will strike up uneasy factions and alliances, many of which can be dashed by a thoughtless post. New posters are uneasily regarded by both sides until they show their true colors and can be placed into either camp. Nonetheless, posting to Internet forums is a wonderful pastime and a most valuable learning experience.
