How does the ozone water purifier work?

The technology used to introduce ozone to water is trivial. Electric energy is used to force standard oxygen particles into the ozone which is then dissolved in the water. As ozone is 3000 times faster to react than chlorine (it is often used instead of the chlorine in municipal water purifiers), it is much more effective for killing bacteria than its predecessor. As the ozone water purifier requires little besides a source of electricity and water, it is relatively easy to install and maintain. There are no filters you have to change from time to time and the number of moving parts is minimized.

What an ozone water purifier can do ...

An ozone water purifier works best if used against bacteria, killing them in huge lots. As the ozone is extremely reactive, the chances that bacteria can live through the ozoning are minimal. They are literally incinerated by the chemical reaction between the cell wall and ozone.

However, an ozone purifier isn't particularly useful for fighting anything but microbes. If you're thinking about buying a filtration system that offers total protection, you are chasing a mirage. No one system can destroy every dangerous ingredient in water.

... and what it can't do

Ozone water purifiers are of little use against anything inorganic, but that's not a big issue once you understand this because you can buy a first-stage filter to weed off inorganic contaminants.

However, the main problem with an ozone water purifier is that ozone may be not able to kill all the bacteria, especially if there are lots of them in the filtered water. 99% effectiveness sounds good until you understand that it means that 1 bacteria out of a hundred will survive the process.

The benefits and problems:

The major benefits of any ozone water purifier are its relative effectiveness and the fact that they are easy to install and maintain. The problem, however, lies in the very fact that ozone water purifiers are too common and effective. Eight times out of 10 your water filtration system will filter a water that has already been ozoned. This puts the whole idea of installing an additional ozone water purifier at home under question. Why should you pay extra for something that is included in your water bill?

The benefits of using an ozone water purifier are indisputable as long as

(1) Your water hasn't been pre-ozoned by the municipal system

(2) You use it in combination with some other filter. For example, a solid carbon block filtration system will stop inorganic contaminants from entering to your home water system. When used with ozone, your water safety increases dramatically.
